New Haven, Conn. -- Maine, which trailed by as many as eight and by one with 4:52 remaining, managed to outscore Yale 12-6 in the final quarter to earn a 47-44 comeback victory for its first win of the season on Friday evening.
Bailey Wilborn's three with 3:50 remaining gave the Black Bears (1-3) a lead they would not relinquish, handing Yale (3-1) its first loss of the season.
Anne Simon paced Maine with a game-high 16 points, her fourth consecutive game reaching double-figures.
Bailey Wilborn sparked Maine off the bench with a carer-high 12 points on four triples while
Maeve Carroll added seven points, 12 rebounds, and four assists.
Maine, which shot 10-of-24 in the second half, finished the game 19-of-51 with an 8-for-23 mark from downtown. The Black Bears forced 15 turnovers with seven steals in a game which featured six lead changes and three ties.
The Bulldogs opened the game on a 13-6 run, taking a seven point advantage with 3:38 left in the first quarter. Wilborn's first three of the evening stopped the Yale sprint and sparked Maine to an 8-2 run of its own, cutting the lead to one.
A 7-0 answer from the Bulldogs gave the hosts their largest lead of the ballgame, 25-17, with 3:35 left in the opening half.
Maine trimmed the lead back down to one on a triple by
Olivia Rockwood midway through the third but could not regain the lead. Yale would answer, this time with a 7-2 run, to push its lead back out to six.
Back to back buckets from Carroll and Simon to start the fourth gave the Black Bears the lead, 39-38, for the first time since the 7:16 mark of the first quarter.
The two teams would trade the lead four times over the next five minutes of action before Maine staged a 6-0 run on back-to-back triples from Wilborn. The run would give Maine its largest lead of the game, 47-42, with 3:03 to play.
Neither team would score over the next 2:20 of action until Yale was able to cash in on a pair of free throws, chipping the Maine advantage to three with 43-seconds on the clock.
Yale would have two more offensive possessions to tie the game but came up short as Maine escaped with its first win of the season, 47-44.
The Black Bears are back in action on Sunday when they travel to meet Boston University at 1 p.m.
