Maine falls in NCAA Tournament, Miami (OH) prevails 3-2 in overtime

Sophomore Poppy Lambert scores both Maine goals

Box Score OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Maine field hockey program fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a heartbreaker to the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks by a 3-2 final in overtime.

Poppy Lambert and the corner unit provided all the offense in regulation, scoring goals in the first and third quarter to stake out a 2-0 lead. Miami responded however with two quick goals back-to-back, and the tie score held through the remainder of regulation to send Maine into yet another overtime.

Maine's magic finally ran out, however, as a two-on-one breakaway in the first overtime half resulted in the game-winner for Miami.

The loss concludes one of, if not the most, successful seasons in Maine field hockey history. The Black Bears set new standards by winning the regular season America East title outright, hosting the conference tournament for the first time, and winning it in for the first time in front of a crowd of nearly a thousand fans in Orono.

Head Coach Josette Babineau's squad wraps their season with 15 wins, including an eight and six-game winning streak. They'll reset and reload to defend their conference title next fall, as they look to return to the NCAA Tournament.
