Boston, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 3/4 Northeastern on Monday afternoon.
Loryn Porter was sensational between the pipes for Maine as the senior goaltender turned away 40 of the 41 shots she faced. After making 44 saves the day before against the Huskies, Porter finished the two-game set with 84 total saves for the Black Bears.
After skating to a scoreless tie through two periods of play, Chloe Aurard's goal at the 2:05 mark into the third period proved to be the difference for the Huskies.
With the game still scoreless in the second,
Brooke Carriere had what may have been Maine's best scoring opportunity of the afternoon. Carriere would scoop up the loose puck in the slot after a turnover deep in the Husky zone by a Northeastern defender. Carriere controlled before immediately wristing a shot on net. However, Aerin Frankel was quick to react, punching the puck wide with the blocker.
Maine had its best chance to even the score when
Ally Johnson broke in with 13:24 left in the third period. Johnson streaked down the right side before whipping a backhand attempt on net but, Frankel would make the save.
Northeastern finished the contest with a 41-21 edge in total shots while Maine controlled the faceoff battle, 34-29. The Black Bears went 0-for-4 on the power play while their penalty kill continued to be strong, killing off all three of Northeastern's chances with the extra skater.
Maine is currently scheduled to continue Hockey East action next weekend. Details on Maine's opponent and location will be released on Tuesday morning.
