ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's soccer team, head coach
Scott Atherley, and his staff have announced their 2020 recruiting class in Tiana Bucknor, Karin Kronberg, Carla Morich, Darby Dupuis, Kayla Kraemer, Delaney LaBonte, Tegan Morrison, and Sophia Santamaria.
Coach Atherley said, "we are very excited to welcome our incoming class. We are adding quality experience and talent to a seasoned group of returning players. These young women are all outstanding players, students and citizens. We look forward to the impact they will all have on our program".
Tiana Bucknor, a 5'8" defender from Milton, Ontario, transferred from the University of Dayton. She appeared in 30 games, while making 11 starts in two seasons at Dayton.
"Tiana is a versatile player. She brings quality experience to our back and midfield lines. Her athleticism, passing range and communication skills will impact our team immediately". Head coach
Scott Atherley went on to say, "
Tiana is a natural leader and someone who I anticipate being equally impactful on and off of the field".
Karin Kronberg, a 5'3" defender from Tibro, Sweden, transferred from Louisiana Tech. Kronberg played in eight matches, while making three starts as a freshman in 2019. She missed the middle third of the 2019 season due to health reasons. Kronberg was a member of Lidkopings FK Elitettan in 2019 and 2020. Her club played in the second highest league in Sweden.
Coach Athlerley was quoted saying,
"Karin is a seasoned player having played at an elite level in Europe. As a first-year player at LA Tech, she started key games and helped lead her team to 13 wins despite missing a month of the season. Karin can play anywhere at the back and is also a capable holding midfielder".
Carla Morich, a 5'6" forward/midfielder from Hamburg, Germany, transferred from Old Dominion University. Morich was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2017. As a true freshman, Morich started every game and tied for first on the team for assists with seven (third most in Conference USA). She was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for her work in the classroom. Morich was a 3
rd Team All-Conference USA selection in 2018. The midfielder was a member of the U15-U17 German National teams as an amateur player.
"Carla is a proven player at many levels. We first became aware of her talents when recruiting her three years ago." Athlerley continued, "
Carla will impact our attack immediately as she can effectively assume a number of roles in midfield and up front".
Darby Dupuis, a 5'7" midfielder from Hooksett, New Hampshire, and Londonderry High School. Dupuis was a four-year starter for Londonderry. She was an All-State selection and team captain in 2019. The midfielder was named team captain of the Scorpions SC ECNL. She was a starter on the Futsal team that won the New England Regional and was a finalist at the US Youth Futsal National Championships in 2016. Off the field, Dupuis was a New Hampshire scholars award winner and an honor roll student at Londonderry.
Coach Athlerley said,
"Darby is well rounded and versatile as a midfielder. She is skillful and industrious. She can get forward in attack and she is conscientious as a defender. She has great potential".
Kayla Kraemer, a 5'8" forward from Waterloo, Ontario, attended Resurrection Catholic Secondary School. Her teams competed in multiple championship. In 2016, Kraemer was part of a National Bronze medalist team, while in 2019, her club was finalist in the Regional Ontario Champion. Kraemer finished in the top three in league school from 2015 to 2019. During her senior season, Kraemer was a first team all-star and was named her team's MVP. Off the field, the forward was an academic all-star in 2018 and 2019.
"Kayla is a skilled winger and someone who is very confident in 1v1 attacking situations." Coach went on to say,
"she has very good speed and has the necessary qualities to become a powerful forward at the Division I level".
Delaney LaBonte, a 5'6" midfielder/defender from York, Maine, played three years at York High School. LaBonte, a member of the varsity squad every year she competed, was named team captain her senior year. The midfielder earned all-conference recognition both her sophomore and senior season. While playing for Seacoast United, LaBonte was a part of a team that received a top 20 national rank.
"We have known Delaney and her family for many years and are excited to finally welcome her to our program. She is a tenacious competitor and someone who is willing to impose herself physically. She brings a no-nonsense disposition to our midfield".
Tegan Morrison, a 5'6" forward from Waterloo, Ontario, attended Sir John A Macdonald High School. Morrison had an extremely successful high school career. In 2016, she played on the #1 ranked club team in Canada. The forward was part of the 2019 WRSL League Championship team and 2019 Regional Champion team. She was the leading goal score in the WRSL in 2018 and 2019.
"Tegan's ability to separate from defenders with her pure speed make her a dynamic and dangerous attacking threat." Coach Athlerley continued, "
she will be a dual sport athlete at Maine (track) and will be equally impactful at both sports".
Sophia Santamaria, a 5'8" defender from Kittery, Maine, played four seasons at Traip Academy. She was a four-year starter at Traip. The defender earned All-Conference honors her sophomore, junior and senior year, while being named All-State her junior and senior season. Santamaria was a member of the 2019 state championship team. She also excelled in ice hockey and track and field.
"Sophia is a tremendous athlete with great potential to develop into a sound defender at our level." Athlerley stated, "
she has been coming to our camp for a number of years and after getting to know her, we really feel like she will bring important intangibles to our team".
