Black Bears the second team in league history to win three-straight titles
Burlington, Vt. – The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated Vermont in a shootout, 4-3, for a third consecutive America East Championship title on Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field.
Elena Barenberg made six saves, including two in the shootout round, to earn the tournament's most outstanding player award. Barenberg was joined by Olivia Grisdale, Jordane Pinette, and Luise Reinwald on the America East All-Championship Team.
Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the third and 18th minutes.
Pinette's goal off a rebound from a Reinwald blast cut Maine's deficit to 2-1 in the 28th minute.
Grace Johnson tied the game at 2-2 with a strike from 20-yards out in the 52nd minute. Julie Lossius and Reinwald each assisted on the game-tying tally.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, the game would move to a shootout.
The first two attempts for both sides found the back of the net before Barenberg came up with a save on Vermont's third attempt. Maine and Vermont traded makes following Barenberg's first shootout save before Grisdale tallied what would be the eventual game-winner. Barenberg made another save on Vermont's final attempt to clinch the title.
