Late Rally Sinks Maine Baseball at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The University of Maine baseball program dropped their second game at Winthrop University of Sunday afternoon, as the Eagles scored seven combined runs in the seventh and eighth inning to take game two of the three-game series. 
  • Redshirt junior Matthew Pushard put together a solid start to make it back-to-back quality starts for the Maine staff. Pushard went five full innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out four while scattering four hits. 
  • The bullpen faltered for the Black Bears, as they combined to give up nine hits and seven runs in three innings. 
  • Maine got off to a good start, with Colby Emmertz leading the game off with a double and coming in to score on a Joe Bramanti sacrifice fly later in the inning. 
  • Hernen Sardinas extended the lead in the fifth inning when he drove in Jordan Glazer for his first RBI of the season.
  • Joe Bramanti went back to work as the next batter up after Sardinas' RBI, driving home Emmertz for the second time to make it 3-0 Maine through five. 
  • Winthrop scored on a wild pitch and an infield error in the fifth to draw it to a 3-2 Maine lead, followed by their seven unanswered runs that put the game out of reach.
  • Sardinas picked up another RBI in the ninth inning, driving home Carlos Linares. 
Maine will look to avoid the weekend sweep tomorrow afternoon against Winthrop, first pitch is set for 1:00 PM as the Black Bears send junior Peter Kemble to the hill to try and get their first victory of 2020.
