Bangor, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team, led by
Maeve Carroll's second consecutive double-double, outscored New Hampshire, 27-17, in the third quarter en route to a 67-50 victory in the Border Battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, on Wednesday evening. The victory moved Maine's consecutive home game conference win streak to 20 straight.
Carroll, who notched her third career double-double in the victory, posted 13 points and 10 rebounds. The totals marked her fourth-straight double-figure scoring performance and the fourth double-digit rebounding performance of the season for the junior.
Maddy McVicar, who registered 15 points in the second half, paced four Black Bears in double-figures, finishing with a team-high and game-high matching 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting including a trio of 3-point field goals. McVicar, now with double-digit scoring in each of her last three and four of her last five, moved her free throw streak to 21 consecutive makes on the season.
Reigning America East Rookie of the Week,
Anne Simon, continued her rapid scoring pace. For the sixth consecutive game, and eighth in her last nine, the freshman finished with double-digits as she registered 13 points, with a career-high six assists.
Dor Saar rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and now stands just one assist shy of tying Julie Bradstreet (330) for ninth on Maine's all-time list.
Maine went 11-for-11 from the free throw line in the contest and outscored New Hampshire 25-11 off turnovers to help seal the victory. In all, Maine went 24-of-55 from the field, 8-of-21 from 3-point range.
After entering the half up by three following a slow offensive first half for both teams, Maine came out on fire in the third quarter. The Black Bears would hit 10-of-15 field goals, including 5-of-7 from downtown, in the period while outscoring New Hampshire 27-17 to help distance itself from the Wildcats.
Maine opened the second half 9-for-10 from the floor beginning with McVicar's first three of the ballgame. The make started an 8-0 run for the Black Bears with Carroll's fast break bucket and a three from Simon completing the stretch to extend Maine's lead to 11.
After the Wildcats cut the lead back down to eight, McVicar and Fogarty went back-to-back from beyond the arc, lifting Maine to a 38-24 lead with 5:54 left in the third. Moments later, Fogarty hit another three, this one a sidestep jumper off a feed from Simon, elevating Maine's lead out to 17.
New Hampshire continued to chip away, entering the fourth quarter trailing by 13. However, Maine would start the final period strong, opening the quarter with a 7-0 run. Saar's three started the sprint before two free throws by McVicar and a jumper from Saar gave Maine its largest lead of the night, 56-36.
The lead would not shrink below 15 the rest of the way as Maine cruised to its second conference win, a 67-50 decision over New Hampshire.
The Black Bears remain home to host UAlbany on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last year's America East semifinal match-up. For tickets, please visit TicketMaster.com or purchase in person at the Cross Insurance Center box office.
