Carroll, Saar Lead Maine Past UAlbany

Black Bears undefeated at home in league play

Bangor, Maine -- The Black Bears opened with an 8-0 run and never looked back, improving to 3-1 in America East play with a 60-49 victory over visiting UAlbany on Saturday evening. Maeve Carroll registered her third double-double in as many games, matching Dor Saar with game-highs of 21 points each.

Carroll, who tallied her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring performance, finished with a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds on 10-of-19 shooting. Dor Saar, now with double-figures in three of her first four America East outings, added 21 points, knocking down five triples while adding six assist and five rebounds. Saar's assist total moved her past Julie Bradstreet and into 10th on Maine's all-time assists list with 335 helpers.

Maine turned in its best rounding effort through its first four conference outings, and its second-highest total of the year, as it was able to outrebound the visiting Great Danes by a 41-33 margin. Maine's rebounding output was distributed across the board, with five Black Bears snatching five or more rebounds in the contest.

The Black Bears, who shot 46.9-percent from the floor in the first half, opened play with an 8-0 run which grew to a 11-1 sprint through the game's opening 6:06. Two buckets from Carroll and a deep jumper from Saar gave the Black Bears an 8-0 lead, forcing UAlbany into an early timeout. A triple by Maddy McVicar shortly after the timeout gave Maine a double-digit lead, 11-1, with 3:54 left in the first.

After UAlbany chipped the lead down to seven at the end of the first, Maine responded. Carroll's layup in the paint began a 7-3 run by the hosts. Saar completed the run, elevating the lead to 11.

Saar remained hot from the outside, hitting back-to-back triples late in the quarter, giving Maine its largest lead, 13, of the first half.

After completing the second 8-of-15 from the floor, 3-for-5 from beoynd the arc, Maine would enter the break with a 35-25 advantage on nine first half points from Saar.

The Great Danes came out of the break and were able to widdle the lead down to six with just over a minute gone in the third. However, Maine once again had an offensive answer from 3-point range. Triples from Saar and Fogarty started an 11-0 run, Maine's longest of the game, stretching the lead to 46-29.

Maine began the fourth with more of the same, another triple as McVicar's long-range bucket gave the Black Bears their largest lead of the game, 53-33, with 9:21 remaining in regulation.

UAlbany was unable to cut the deficit under double-digits the rest of the way as the Black Bears picked up their second-straight league win, 60-49.

Maine continues America East play on Wednesday when they travel to UMass Lowell for an 11 a.m. tip-off.
