Stony Brook, N.Y. --
Maeve Carroll led five Black Bear scorers in double-digits as the University of Maine women's basketball (5-11, 1-1) team suffered its first America East loss since Jan. 16, 2019 with a 73-69 final at Stony Brook (14-1, 2-0) on Sunday afternoon.
All five of Maine's starters registered double-figure scoring efforts, led by Carroll. Carroll recorded her second career double-double, finishing with a career-best 19 points and 10 rebounds while nearly tallying a triple-double with nine assists. For the fifth consecutive game, and the seventh in her last eight,
Anne Simon recorded double-digits with 15 points while matching a career-best with eight boards.
Dor Saar added 13 points and four assists while
Kelly Fogarty added four triples for 12 points.
Maddy McVicar rounded out Maine's five double-figure scorers with 10 points. The five double-figure scorers marked the second time this season in which Maine has seen five tally double-digits, with the last coming on Dec. 4 against Husson.
India Pagan led all scorers, going 13-of-14 from the field to finish with 26 points.
Maine assisted on 17 of its 27 made field goals while going 10-of-23 from 3-point range, marking the second consecutive double-digit night from beyond the arc.
The Black Bears opened the contest hot from the field, shooting 15-of-25 in the first half including an 8-for-13 mark in the second quarter.
The first quarter was the definition of a seesaw period with 10 lead changes and three ties over the 10 minute stretch. Trailing by one, Saar dialed up a triple to put Maine up, 9-8, with 4:38 left in the quarter. Stony Brook would answer with an 8-0 run to take a six point lead, an advantage that would carry into the second quarter.
Maine kept its hot shooting start alive in the second, beginning the quarter with a 7-0 run. Fogarty opened the period with a triple before buckets by McVicar and Carroll gave Maine a 24-23 advantage.
The teams traded the lead four more times before a three from McVicar came before a steal by Carroll led to a bucket by Saar to build a 34-30 lead for the Black Bears.
Maine would maintain its advantage, taking a 38-34 lead into the break.
Stony Brook looked to take control in the third, opening up a nine point lead with a 16-3 run. With the Seawolves' lead growing to 50-41 after a 12-0 run, Maine began to chip away. Simon's layup cut the lead to seven before a Stony Brook turnover led to a three from Saar as Maine found itself down four with 1:39 remaining in the third quarter.
After falling behind by eight in the fourth, Maine continued to fight. Back-to-back treys from Fogarty widdled the deficit back down to four with five minutes remaining in regulation.
The lead would remain four after Carroll's offensive putback with 18-seconds on the clock. Maine was forced to foul late and it would look to payoff as Stony Brook missed both of its free throws. Trailing by four, Maine moved into the offensive zone but were unable to maintain control, turning it back over to Stony Brook. The Seawolves would dribble out the clock to escape with the 73-69 victory.
Maine continues America East action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when it hosts New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in the Border Battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings.
