Burlington, Vt. --
Maeve Carroll recorded her fourth double-double in conference play, registering career-highs in points, 23, and rebounds, 15, to help guide Maine to a 65-47 road victory on Wednesday evening at Vermont.
The victory, Maine's first conference road win of the season, snapped a two-game losing skid as the Black Bears improved to 4-3 in league play.
Carroll was dominant all evening long, posting her seventh double-digit scoring performance in her last eight outings while tallying her sixth double-digit rebounding showing of the season. Carroll, who finished 10-of-20 from the floor, was joined in double-digits by three other Black Bears.
Dor Saar knocked down four triples en route to a 14 point night while Fogarty matched Saar's 3-point figure, finishing with 12 points of her own.
Maddy McVicar joined the trio in double-digits, adding 10 points and a career-best eight boards.
The Black Bears, who held Vermont to single-digit scoring performances in both the second and third quarters, finished with just eight turnovers, marking the second time this season in which they've limited themselves to single-digit giveaways. The 47 points surrendered by Maine was the lowest point total scored against the Black Bears in conference play this season and the second-lowest total overall through the first 21 games.
After shooting an impressive 15-of-32 from the floor, including a 6-for-12 showing from downtown, in the first half, Maine ended the game 27-of-65 and 8-of-18 from 3-point range.
With
Anne Simon missing the game due to illness, Maine played just six players with Saar, Fogarty, McVicar and
Anna Kahelin each logging 40 minutes of action.
Maine, which went 9-of-19 through the game's first 10-minutes, carried a 13-11 lead midway through the first quarter before ending the opening stanza on a 9-2 run. Six points from Carroll coupled with a triple by Saar lifted Maine's lead to 22-13 after one.
The offense kept charging for Maine in the second. The Black Bears hit 6-of-13 from the floor while shooting 50-percent from beyond the arc in the second period.
Fogarty's triple gave Maine its first double-digit lead early in the second, 25-15. After Vermont responded with a bucket, Fogarty answered with another trey, this one beginning a a 7-0 run. McVicar forced a steal before cashing in on a fastbreak bucket before Kahelin's jumper extended Maine's lead to 32-17 late in the half.
Four-straight points from Carroll sent Maine into the break with a 17-point advantage.
After closing the first half on a 4-0 run, Maine opened the second on an 8-0 sprint. The 12-point swing pushed Maine's lead out to 25 with two buckets each coming from Kahelin and Carroll on the run.
The lead dipped to 22 at the end of the third but once again, Maine would get off to a hot start to start the fourth and final quarter. The Black Bears reeled off 10 unanswered points as Saar's triple with 6:31 remaining in the contest gave Maine its largest lead at 61-29.
Vermont closed out the contest with a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to 18 but it would be too little too late as Maine would pick up its fourth league victory of the season, 65-47.
