Providence Outlasts No. 24 Maine in Overtime

ORONO, Maine - The No. 24 University of Maine field hockey team fell in their home opener on Sunday afternoon, as Providence College outlasted the Black Bears to score the sudden-victory goal in overtime and secure the 5-4 win.

The loss drops the Black Bears to 0-2 on the young 2019 season, while the Friars rise to an even 1-1 record so far. Both teams traded goals throughout regulation, culminating in a Brianna Ricker tip-in goal to tie the game at 4-4 late in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Providence had plenty of opportunities to end the game in regulation, totaling six corner attempts in the final quarter, but took until 12 minutes into the overtime period to get the game-winner off the stick of Nora Goddard-Despot for the 5-4 sudden victory.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
