ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team was defeated by Stony Brook, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Kessock Field on the campus of the University of Maine.

Stony Brook scored the game's first runs in the top of the first inning. Three singles equalled two runs for the Seawolves. After the first at bat of the game, Maine trailed 2-0.

Craig added another run for Stony Brook in the top of the second with a solo shot to right field. 3-0 was the Black Bears' deficit at the end of one and a half innings.

For the third straight inning, the Seawolves extended their lead. This time they used a two run homerun. Stony Brook held a 5-0 advantage after only three at bats. A single to right field scored one more for the visitors in the fourth.

Brianna Neely cut into the Stony Brook lead with a single to right field. After five complete in Orono, the Black Bears trailed 7-1.

Maddie Decker did her best to start a rally in the bottom of the sixth when the senior launched her fourth home run of the season.
Alyssa Derrick joined in on the home run trend with a solo shot of her own. Unfortunately for the Black Bears, it was as close as they would great. Stony Brook held onto their 7-3 lead for a win in game number one of the weekend.

Notes:
- Emily Reid (4-14) went 5.0 innings for the Black Bears, while giving up six earned runs and striking out one. Lilly Volk closed out the game for Maine. The sophomore did not allow a run and struck out one.
- Maddie Decker and Alyssa Derrick each hit a solo home run. Brianna Neely drove in the other run for the Black Bears.
