Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Hockey Falls in First Game at #11/#13 UMass

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the #11/#13 UMass Minutemen, 5-1, on Friday night in the Mullins Center.

First Goal (#11/#13 UMass 1-0): After the Black Bears had a great chance turned away by the Minutemen goaltender, Oliver Chau scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Jake McLaughlin fired to puck ahead to Chau, who did the rest.

Second Goal (#11/#13 UMass 2-0): Less than two minutes later, Bobby Trivigno added to his squad's lead. Much like the first goal of the evening, the Minutemen had a 2-on-1 advantage. John Leanord led the breakaway opportunity but played the puck over to Trivigno. #11/#13 UMass had an early 2-0 lead.

Third Goal (#11/#13 UMass 3-0): Marc Del Gaizo, on a 6-on-4, scored the third goal of the first period. The Black Bears had been called for a five minute major. While trying to fight off the five minute, Maine was called for another penalty. The Minutemen pulled their netminder and added another skater. Mitchell Chaffee and Anthony Del Gaizo were credited with the assists on the goal.

Fourth Goal (#11/#13 UMass 4-0): Ty Farmer extended the advantage to four with a goal 00:16 into the second period. Jeremy Swayman was unable to see the shot through the traffic in front of the net.

Fifth Goal (#11/#13 UMass 4-1): Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup scored Maine's only goal of the night at the beginning of a 5-on-3 power play. Adam Dawe won the face-off back to Eduards Tralmaks who found Schmidt-Svejstrup. The Black Bears trailed by three at the end of two periods.

Sixth Goal (#11/#13 UMass 5-1): John Leanord scored the final goal of the night of the Minutemen with 3:38 left in the Hockey East contest.

The 5-1 tally stood as the University of Massachusetts would defeat the University of Maine on night one of the two game series.

Notes: Jeremy Swayman (8-6-3) finished with 37 saves, while Matt Murray (6-1-0) tallied 20 for UMass.

Maine went 1-5 on the power play, as the Minutemen were 1-5 on their man advantages.

The Black Bears blocked five shots as a team.

Next: The two Hockey East foes will do battle once again tomorrow, December 7. Puck drop for the Saturday night game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
