AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the #11/#13 UMass Minutemen, 4-1, on Saturday night in the Mullins Center.

The first period ended in a scoreless tie.
Jeremy Swayman finished with 12 saves, and
Matt Murray tallied five. Maine's penalty kill unit went 2-2 in the opening 20 minutes.

First Goal (#11/#13 UMass 1-0): Mitchell Chaffee broke the scoreless tie 12:57 into the second period. After a scrum in front of the Maine net, Oliver Chau's shot bounced to an unmarked Chaffee. The forward lifted the puck over a diving
Jeremy Swayman. The Minutemen grabbed a one goal lead just over halfway through the period.

Second Goal (#11/#13 UMass 2-0): While on the power play, John Leonard gave his squad a two-goal lead. The puck was worked around the Maine defense by Chaffee and Marc Del Gaizo until Chaffee found Leonard. The 5-on-4 tally extended the Minutemen lead to two.

Third Goal (#11/#13 UMass 3-0): 00:18 seconds after the power play goal, Niko Hildenbrand scored his team's third goal of the period. Jake Gaudet drew the attention of the Black Bears, which left Hildenbrand alone next to Swayman. After two periods, UMass had a 3-0 advantage.

Fourth Goal (#11/#13 UMass 3-1):
Adam Dawe scored Maine's only goal of the night on the Black Bears' first power play opportunity of the evening. Dawe won the face-off back to
Mitchell Fossier, who played the puck over to
Levi Kleiboer. The freshman found Dawe, and he did the rest.

Fifth Goal (#11/#13 UMass 4-1): Philip Lagunov scored an empty net goal at 17:22 in the third period. It would also be the final score of the Hockey East contest.

Matt Murray tallied 23 for UMass.

Maine went 1-1 on the power play, as the Minutemen were 1-3 on their man advantages.
