LAST TIME OUT
- The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to another Huskies team, as the ones from Northeastern University handed the Black Bears a 78-63 final score at Matthews Arena in Boston.
- Peter Stumer put up the best performance of his freshman campaign, logging a career-high 28 minutes and dropping in 12 points on 4-8 shooting from three-point territory.
- The box score was filled by Andrew Fleming once again, as he led the Black Bears with 23 points on 9-13 shooting from the field, along with six rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal.
- Miks Antoms put together another gritty performance in the paint, with 7 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
- Maine cut down on turnovers, but not by quite enough, as they still lost the battle by a 16-10 margin. As a team, the Black Bears put up a solid 47.9% mark from the field and a 10-14 night from the free-throw line, but a 7-22 performance from three hurt Maine.
MAINE GAME NOTESÂ
- The Black Bears enter today ranked 8th in the nation by ESPN and 12th by KenPom.com in strength of schedule across all of Division I men's basketball. Vermont is the next highest-ranked America East team in each ranking, coming in at 25th on ESPN and 50th on KenPom.com.
- Maine features one of the youngest rosters in the America East this season with seven freshmen on their bench this year. Of those seven, six different nations are represented, as Maine features players from Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Serbia, Turkey, and the United States. Overall, Maine has representatives from ten different countries, with Lebanon, Latvia, Ukraine, and England being represented by the upperclassmen.
- Maine's younger members have begun to carve out their minutes in the rotation this season. Freshman Precious Okoh is one of just four Black bears to appear in all eight games and the only freshman to do so, logging an average of 15.8 minutes a game at the point guard position. Classmate Peter Stumer has seen his minutes load increase with each game, peaking in Wednesday's tilt with Northeastern where he dropped in a career-high 12-points on a 4-8 day from three-point land along with four rebounds and a steal in a career-high 28 minutes. Stephane Ingo has also increased his court time game-to-game, averaging 12.9 minutes a game off the bench including 34 against UConn on December 1st where he put up five blocks, not only a career-high for the young Canadian, but the first time a Black Bear has reached five blocks in a single game since Mike Allison accomplished the feat on January 30th of 2013 against UNH.
- Maine has a handful of players in the top-ten of the America East in a few different statistical categories, including Andrew Fleming who is third in scoring (18.5), tenth in rebounds (6.8), third in field goal percentage (53.8), and fourth in minutes per game (34.4). Also appearing is Nedeljko Prijovic who is tied for second in the conference with 1.4 steals a game and Stephane Ingo who ranks third in blocks per game at 1.4. Sergio El Darwich has missed the past few games with a nagging injury, but still ranks fourth in free throw percentage (86.7) and is tied for third in assists (4.0).
- As a team, Maine is in second place in the conference in points allowed per game (64.0) and their perimeter defense has them ranked first in opponents three-point percentage (28.8).Â
CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE GAME NOTES
- Central Connecticut State enters today still in search of their first win of 2019-20, starting the year with eight straight losses. They've dropped three games this year to America East teams, falling to UNH (77-63), Vermont (81-49), and UMass Lowell (73-71).
- After ending last season on a six-game skid, the Blue Devils' last win came on February 9th. They did best Maine a year ago in a wild double-overtime thriller at Cross Insurance Center on December 22nd that CCS won by a 93-90 final.
- Freshman Greg Outlaw leads the Blue Devils in scoring at 10.1 points per game, followed by senior Jamir Coleman at 9.9.
- Stephane Ayangma has a team-high 5.3 boards a game, and freshman Jamir Reed has 2.0 assists a game to lead CCS.
