MAINE GAME NOTES

  • The Black Bears enter Sunday's tilt ranked 23rd in the nation by ESPN and 17th by KenPom.com in strength of schedule across all of Division I men's basketball. Vermont is the next highest-ranked America East team in each ranking, coming in at 93rd on ESPN and 126th on KenPom.com.
  • The Black Bears ran into the buzzsaw Virginia defense last Wednesday afternoon, as the Cavaliers held Maine to just 26 points, tied for the lowest points allowed in Virginia history during the shot-clock era (since 1986). This is the third time this season Virginia has held an opponent under 40 points in just seven games.
  • To put a hometown spin on things, Maine held Virginia to their lowest point total of the season, as the Cavaliers shot 38.6% (17-44) from the floor.
  • Vilgot Larsson had nine of Maine's points to lead the team, going 2-4 from three-point land. Miks Antoms played well down low, playing a career-high 36 minutes and recording five rebounds (four offensive) and four assists.
  • Maine out-rebounded Virginia 32-27, but 21 Maine turnovers resulted directly in 20 Cavalier points to help sink the Black Bears.
  • As a team, Maine ranks second in the America East conference in points allowed per game at 61.7 so far this season, just behind Vermont's 57.9 mark.
UCONN RUNDOWN
  • The Huskies are off to a strong start this season, posting a 4-2 overall record that includes a 62-59 win over No. 15 Florida on November 17th. They dropped a 96-87 decision to Saint Joseph's University the game before, and fell on November 22nd to Xavier in a 75-74 double-overtime thriller as part of the Charleston Classic tournament in South Carolina for their second loss of the year.
  • Dan Hurley is in his second season as the head coach in Connecticut, after leading UConn to a 16-17 overall record with a 6-12 mark in the American Athletic Conference in 2018-19.
  • Senior guard Christian Vital leads the Huskies in scoring this season with 16.0 points per game on a 36.4/35.1/96.4 shooting split. His 96.4% mark from the charity stripe leads the conference, as does his 3.2 steals per game, and he averages 9.0 rebounds a game to lead the UConn roster.
  • Alterique Gilbert leads the Huskies and sits third in the conference with 4.0 assists per game.
  • The Huskies lead their conference as a team with 7.0 blocks per game, an effort led by redshirt-freshman Akok Akok and his 3.2 blocks per game.
