MAINE NOTES

  • Last week saw the Black Bears went west for the second-longest road trip they'll make this season, only bested by a late-December trip to Hawaii. Maine took on the University of Portland in their first western shootout, falling to the Pilots by a 71-62 final score in a game that featured eight lead changes and four ties. A 16-5 run between the 6:31 and 1:09 mark of the second half sealed the deal for the Pilots, as the Black Bears fell behind a season-high 21 points from senior point guard Sergio El Darwich. Next up for Maine was a trip to Seattle to take on the No. 25-ranked Huskies of Washington University. In front of a crowd of 8,000+ at the Alaska Airlines Arena, Maine fell to reigning Pac-12 Conference regular-season champions by a 72-53 final score.
  • More recently, Maine hit the floor at the Portland Expo in Southern Maine. The Black Bears rolled to a 90-50 victory that saw Andrew Fleming post a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double on a cool 10-11 performance from the field. Miks Antoms dropped in a season-high 13 points in his second start of the year, while Stephane Ingo recorded a career-high four blocks off the bench. The Black Bears put up season-highs as a team in steals (14), blocks (6), and rebounds (48).
  • A look at the America East statistical leaders will present a few Black Bears among the conference leaders including Sergio El Darwich tied for first in assists per game (4.8), Nedeljko Prijovic leading the conference in three-point shooting percentage (47.8) and steals per game (1.8), and Andrew Fleming sitting in second place in points per game (20.4) and third in field-goal percentage (58.0).

VIRGINIA VITALS

  • The reigning national champions, Virginia has not slowed down since last spring's run to the title. They've started 2019-20 with a perfect 6-0 record so far with a +14.0 average scoring margin. Most recently, they knocked off Pac-12 opponent Arizona State by a 48-45 final to win the Air Force Tip-Off Tournament in Connecticut.
  • Mamadi Diakite is the leading scorer for the Cavaliers, averaging 13.7 ppg in his redshirt-senior season. Diakite was a major component of last year's team that ranked fifth in the nation in defensive efficiency, as Diakite blocked 1.7 shots a game and seven across the two Final Four matchups. This year he's averaging 1.0 swats a game.
  • Braxton Key is another key part of the Cavaliers, averaging 10.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds a contest.
  • Three-time National and four-time ACC Coach of the Year Tony Bennett has a 260-89 (.745) mark in 11 seasons at Virginia.
