Maine falls to Portland

PORTLAND, Oregon - The University of Maine Black Bears fell to the Pilots from Portland University on Saturday night, in a game that featured eight lead changes and four ties. 

After a Precious Okoh layup beat the halftime buzzer to send the game into the break at 30-27 Portland, Maine came out and grabbed the lead with a 6-0 run to start the half. The Pilots stayed composed, however, rattling off a 16-5 run between the 6:31 and 1:09 mark of the final stanza to cruise to the 71-62 final score victory. 

MAINE GAME NOTES
  • Sergio El Darwich led the way for Maine for the second straight contest, logging just under 40 minutes and 21 points, five assists, and four rebounds. 
  • El Darwich was one of three Black Bears to reach double-figures, joined by Andrew Fleming and Nedeljko Prijovic with 14 and 10 respectively. Fleming also added in six assists and five rebounds, while Prijovic pulled down a team-high seven boards and threes steals. 
  • Precious Okoh logged major minutes off the bench, totaling nine points and a pair of rebounds in 31 minutes.
  • Maine put it together in the second half after shooting 36.7% from the field in the first, putting up a 53.9% mark in the final twenty minutes. 
  • The Black Bears left some points at the charity stripe, going just 7-14 from the free-throw line, their lowest percentage of the season so far. 
  • With the loss, Maine falls to 1-2 on the young 2019-20 season. 
UP NEXT
  • Maine will pack up and head north for their next tilt, as they travel to take on No. 20 Washington on Tuesday night, a game scheduled to tip at 8:00 PM Pacific Time. 
  • The Black Bears will head back east following Tuesday night's game, as they head back to Orono to prepare for their November 24th date with Maine Maritime at the Portland Expo.
