BURLINGTON, Vermont -- Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup's two goals and
Jeremy Swayman's 31 saves led the University of Maine men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Vermont Catamounts on Friday evening.
Â
First Goal (Maine 1-0): Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup picked up where he left off by scoring the first goal of the evening.
Tim Doherty won the face-off back to Schmidt-Svejstrup who played a little tic-tac-toe with his linemate. Doherty found the sophomore for Maine's first tally of the Hockey East contest.
Â
The second period was a battle of the two all-conference netminders.
Jeremy Swayman turned away 11 Catamount shots, as Stefanous Lekkas stopped seven Black Bear chances. Each squad's penalty kill units were perfect in the middle 20:00.
Â
Second Goal (1-1 ): As a result of an unforced turnover, the Catamounts tied the game at one goal apiece with 14:48 to go in the game. Joey Cipollone found the back of the net after Andrew Lucas' shot was saved by Swayman.
Â
Third Goal (Maine 2-1): On a 5-on-4 advantage,
Ben Poisson won the face-off back to
Levi Kleiboer. Kleiboer patiently waited for Schmidt-Svejstrup to find some room. Once that happened, the freshman found Schmidt-Svejstrup who did the rest. Maine had a late 2-1 lead.
Â
Despite Vermont pulling their goaltender with over a minute left in regulation, the Catamounts were unable to find the game tying goal. Maine grabbed their first Hockey East victory of the 2019-20 season.
Â
Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 31 saves, while Stefanos Lekkas tallied 31 for Vermont.
Â
Maine went 1-4 on the power play, as the Catamounts were 0-5 on their man advantages.
Â
The two Hockey East clubs split the face-off battle, 33-33.
Â
Next: Maine will return to the friendly confines of the Alfond Arena to host a two-game series with Boston University. Puck drop for Friday, November 1st is scheduled for 7:30.
