HAMDEN, Connecticut - The University of Maine men's ice hockey was defeated by #8/#10 Quinnipiac, 4-3, on Saturday night.
Â
First Goal (Maine 1-0): JD Greenway blocked and corralled a Quinnipiac shot. The junior defenseman turned and led a fastbreak with
Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup. Greenway found Schmidt-Svejstrup who fired a screaming, wrister that found its way into the Bobcats' net. Maine led by a goal very early into the first.
Â
Second Goal (1-1): The puck took a Quinnipiac bounce as Maine tried to clear it. Michael Lombardi tallied his squad's first of the night. The Bobcats' answer was approximately one minute after Maine's lamp lighter.
Â
Third Goal (Quinnipiac 2-1): Ethan Leyh, less than two minutes later, gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead when he scored a top shelf goal for the home team. With 13:43 left in the period, Quinnipiac had a one point advantage.
Â
Fourth Goal (Quinnipiac 3-1): Ethan de Jong joined the scoring with goal of his own at 7:02 of the first period. Odeen Tufto set up the scoring opportunity for his teammate. The two New England schools combined for four first period goals over the first 13 minutes.
Â
Fifth Goal (Quinnipiac 3-2): One goal was not enough for the forward from Denmark. Schmidt-Svejstrup's one-timer found its way through a very crowded net front and into the goal. Maine only trailed by one goal entering the third period.
Â
Sixth Goal (Quinnipiac 4-2): Wyatt Bongiovanni scored directly off of a Bobcats face-off win. Odeen Tufto was credited with the face-off win and assist. The goal came three minutes into the third period.
Â
Seventh Goal (Quinnipiac 4-3): Eduards Tralmaks pulled the Black Bears to within one goal when his odd man rush resulted in a goal.
Tim Doherty played the puck ahead to his linemate who did the rest. Tralmaks third tally of the weekend made it a one goal game with nine minutes to go in the contest.
Â
Despite pulling Swayman for the final minute, Maine was unable to find the game tying goal as they would fall to 3-2, 0-1 on the short season.
Â
Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 31 saves as
Matthew Thiessen was given the start and stopped three. Keith Petruzzelli tallied 22 for Quinnipiac.
Â
Maine went 1-4 on the power play, as the Bobcats were 0-5 on their man advantages.
Â
The Black Bears blocked 26 shots as a team.
Â
Next: Maine will travel to Hockey East rival, Vermont, Friday, October 25th. Puck drop for the single game is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
