STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (12-7, 5-1 America East) held Stony Brook (14-4, 3-2) to just six points in the fourth quarter as it was able to go on the road and hand the Seawolves a 68-54 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Blanca Millan led all scorers with 20 points, 13 of which coming in the second quarter, while
Fanny Wadling tallied her second double-double in as many games, finishing with 14 points and matching a career-best with 15 boards.
Dor Saar also matched a career-high with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Millan's points total pushed her past Tracey Frenette and into 14th place on Maine's all-time scoring list with 1,200 career points.
The Black Bears ran a highly efficient offense against Stony Brook, assisting on 23 of their 29 field goals with Saar and
Maeve Carroll each tallying five helpers. The Black Bears showed their fight late in the periods as they were able to put together several runs over the closing minutes of each quarter.
It was back and forth in the opening half with two lead changes and two ties in the first quarter and no team able to separate itself by more than five points over the first 10-minutes. After Maine opened the game on a 5-0 run, Stony Brook rallied back to tie it at seven before taking a three point lead. Maine chipped away, closing the first on a 6-1 run to carry a 17-15 lead into the second.
Millan took over the offense in the second, scoring 13 of Maine's 28 points in the period with a 6-for-7 showing in the period. The Black Bears held on to their lead over the first 6:30 of the quarter before a layup from Jonae Cox regained a one point edge for the Seawolves. 12-5
Much like in the first quarter, Maine was again able to close the period strong. The Black Bears close the half on a 12-5 run, with nine points from Millan, to build a 38-32 lead at the break.
The Black Bears held on to their six point lead midway through the third before Stony Brook rallied. A 6-0 run from the Seawolves tied the game for a third time with 4:34 left in the period. However, again Maine was able to close the quarter on a high note. The Black Bears used a 10-2 run over the final four minutes of the third to extend their lead to eight. Triples from
Parise Rossignol and Saar came as part of a 6-0 run to close the quarter as Maine led, 56-48 entering the final stanza.
Maine separated itself for good over the final 10-minutes, outscoring the Seawolves 12-6 in the fourth. The Black Bears opened the quarter on a 6-0 run, with buckets from Wadling and Millan before Carroll's strong take extended the lead to 14. With 2:44 remaining, Saar's jumper gave Maine its largest lead of the game at 66-50.
The Black Bears closed out the game strong, moving to 5-1 in league play with a 68-54 victory.
