BANGOR, Maine --
Blanca Millan poured in 29 points as the University of Maine women's basketball team (13-7, 6-1) cruised past Binghamton (8-12, 3-4) by a final of 95-66 on Sunday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.
Maine's offense was on fire against the Bearcats as the Black Bears' 95 point output was their most against a conference foe since tallying 98 in a victory over Delaware on Feb. 8, 1998. The Black Bears were especially impressive in the third quarter where they poured in 35 points; a new school-record for points in a quarter. In the third period alone, Maine went 10-of-16 from the field, 5-for-6 from three-point range and hit 10-of-11 from the free throw stripe.
Maine, which finished the contest with 23 assists and just four turnovers, held the rebounding advantage over Binghamton by a 47-34 final margin. Maine went 35-of-72 overall from the floor, hitting 11 triples while knocking down 14-of-17 from the charity stripe.
Millan, who went 11-of-19 from the floor with six boards, was joined in double-digits by
Parise Rossignol who finished with 14 on 6-of-8 shooting.
Dor Saar racked up 11 points, nine assists and five boards while
Tanesha Sutton added 10 points.
Fanny Wadling continued her stretch of strong rebounding efforts, posting her third-consecutive game with double-digit boards (10) while chipping in eight points.
It was another hot start at home for the Black Bears, who raced out to a 14-4 edge on a layup by Saar with 4:24 left in the first. The lead dipped to four before Saar dialed up a triple, giving Maine a 17-10 advantage after one.
Binghamton continued to chip away, cutting the lead back down to four with 2:51 remaining in the half. Maine would respond as it was able to built a 13 point lead following a 10-1 run. Buckets from Wadling and Millan preceded another triple from Saar. Millan ripped down a rebound and raced down court, forcing her way to the bucket for two and drawing the foul. After completing the three-point play, Maine's lead would stand at 41-28.
Maine put together one of its most impressive offensive quarters in history in the third period. Leading by 10, Maine strung together a 14-5 in just over three minutes. Back-to-back three-point field goals from Saar and Rossignol stretched the lead to 17. Another three-point play from Millan followed, giving the Black Bears a 61-42 cushion with 3:41 remaining in the period. The advantage reached 20 shortly after on a trey by Millan. The Black Bears closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to carry a 76-50 lead into the final quarter. In all, Maine was able to tally an impressive 29 points over the last 7:10 of the third.
In the fourth, Maine continued its strong play on the offensive end as its lead would never sink below 26 the rest of the way.
Kelly Fogarty's triple with 1:58 remaining in regulation gave Maine its largest lead of the contest, 92-60.
The Black Bears would cruise the rest of the way to move to 6-1 in America East play with a 95-66 victory over Binghamton.
