PHILADELPHIA/HARTFORD, Conn. – The UMaine men's track and field team had a busy weekend, competing at both the Penn Relays and the UMass Pre-Conference Meet. The Black Bears earned fourth-place at UMass, earning 90 points.
The Black Bears kicked off the weekend on Thursday at the Penn Relays; the oldest and largest track meet in the United States. Competing against top-competition,
Aaron Willingham placed 88
th in Men's 5000m with a time of 15:12.20 in the Maine's first event of the meet.
On Friday, Maine began the day at Franklin Field with the pole vault and high jump, as
Troy Davis tied for 31
st in the high jump, with a top leap of 1.96m.
Alecsander Wortman earned 22
nd in the pole vault, clearing 4.25m. The Black Bears closed the day with two relays, as the group of
Benjamin Davis,
Elijah Yeboah,
Isaac Yeboah and
Mozai Nelson took 20
th of 33 in the 4x200 relay. Davis, Nelson, E. Yeboah and
John Hassett grabbed 14
th among 32 in the Sprint Medley Championship of America Invitational, recording a time of 3:27.86.
On the final day of competition in the City of Brotherly Love, Maine ran in the 4x200 Eastern. Davis, Nelson, E. Yeboah, and I. Yeboah earned fifth by crossing the finish line in 1:29.32 in the Black Bears' final event in Philly.
At UMass on Saturday,
Elijah White earned a first-place finish in the triple jump (14.29m), while also taking second in the long jump (6.97m), to earn the Black Bears 18 team points.
Andrew Smith grabbed second in the 100m (11.66), while
Jacob Terry also put together a runner-up performance, registering a time of 15:35.41 in the 5000m.
Branden Kuusela added eight points to Maine with a second-place run in the 400m hurdles (56.46).
Michael O'Clair took sixth in the event, crossing the finish line in 58.97.
Adam Lufkin finished second in the discus with an IC4A and New Englands qualifying distance of 48.34m. He also met a NEICAA qualifying distance in the shot put, with a fourth-place mark of 14.91m.
In his first meet of the season,
Kelby Mace grabbed second-place in the javelin, with a top throw of 56.45m.
Isaiah Allen (52.58m) and
Jacob Bossi (49.96m) followed Mace with personal-best throws, as the Maine swept second through fourth in the javelin to earn a total of 19 points in the event.
In the 4x400 relay, the squad of Eric Fay-Wolf, O'Clair, Kuusela, and
Andrew Clement recorded a time of 3:31.18 for fourth place among the eight teams to round out the top-times on the day for Maine.
UMass won the meet with 164 points, followed by UNH with 158 points. UMass Lowell took third with 107, as Dartmouth (76) and Vermont (38) round out the teams in fifth and sixth.
Maine is back in action next weekend at the America East Championships. The conference championship meet is set to start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday in Baltimore.
