Men's Hoops Returns Home to Host Stony Brook Sunday

 TIPPING OFF: Following a tough loss on the road at UNH on Thursday night, the Maine Black Bears (6-20, 3-8 AE) return to the Cross Insurance Center on Sunday afternoon to face Stony Brook (9-16, 4-7 AE). The opening tip in Bangor is slated for 2:00 p.m.

THROWIN' IT BACK: The Black Bears will be sporting retro shooting shirts at Sunday's game. Fans can buy a shooting shirt, and the whole UMaine Legacy Collection at the Cross Insurance Center today, or by visiting the Bookstore, or Bear Necessities.
 
COACH WALSH CHALK TALK: Before every home America East Conference game, fans can hear Coach Bob Walsh breakdown the upcoming game on the club level (third floor) of the Cross Insurance Center behind the Maine bench. Sunday's edition of Chalk Talk starts at 1:30 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT: With the score tied at 48-48, the Maine Black Bears were outscored down the stretch by a mark of 23-8, falling to the New Hampshire 71-56 on Thursday night at Lundholm Gymnasium. The Black Bears led 34-24 at the half, but New Hampshire outscored Maine 47-22 over the final 20 minutes to earn the their sixth America East win of the season.
 
A LOOK AT STONY BROOK: Stony Brook snapped a five-game losing streak with a convincing 81-68 victory over UMass Lowell on Thursday night. The win lifted the Seawolves to sole possession of sixth place in the America East standings. Akwasi Yeboah leads Stony Brook with 15.2 points per game. The Seawolves lead the America East in steals (7.9 per game), and offensive rebounds (12.0 per game.)
 
THE SERIES: Stony Brook leads the all-time series 23-14, earning wins in each of the last 15 meetings.  The Black Bears last defeated the Seawolves on Jan. 22, 2011 in a 70-59 victory at Alfond Arena. Maine started the game on fire, taking an early 25-6 lead halfway through the first half. In the second half, Stony Brook chipped away at the lead, but could not complete the comeback. Four Black Bears reached double-figures in scoring, led by 17 points from Troy Barnies.
 
THE LAST MEETING: The first meeting between Stony Brook and Maine went down to the wire, with Aaron Calixte draining a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to give Maine a 69-68 lead in the America East opener on Jan. 3. Andrew Fleming sunk a free throw to extend the Black Bears' lead to 70-68, but Stony Brook's UC Iroegbu knocked down a game-winning deep trey with four seconds left to lift Stony Brook to a 71-70 win.
 
CALIXTE 1K: Aaron Calixte became the 30th Black Bear ever to reach the 1,000 point milestone on Thursday against UNH, when the redshirt junior knocked down his 1,000th point with a free throw with 5:16 left in the first half. He became the 30th Black Bear to reach the milestone, and the first since Gerald McLemore in 2011. Calixte finished the game with a team-high 16 points, bringing his career total to 1,009 points. The redshirt junior made all eight of his free throw attempts, and also brought down six rebounds and dished two assists.
 
A NEW STREAK: Earlier this season, Calixte made a school record 37-consecutvice free throws, passing UMaine Hall-of-Famer and NBA draft pick Skip Chappelle's 32 straight makes. Over his last five games, Calixte has started another streak, making 16 consecutive attempts. With five games remaining in the regular season, he would have to average 4.2 free throws made and attempted each game to match his school record. 
 
RED HOT: Andrew Fleming has hit his stride offensively as of late, recording double-figures in scoring in five consecutive games. The South Paris, Maine native tallied 12 points in his last outing against New Hampshire. Over his last five games, he is averaging 13.4 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, and has made 14 of his last 16 free throw attempts. In 11 America East games, the 2016-17 AE All-Rookie team member is averaging 10.5 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per contest. ­­
 
UP NEXT: The Black Bears will hit the road for a three-game road trip following Sunday's game, starting with a trip to Hartford on Feb. 15.  Maine is back at the Cross Insurance Center on Feb. 27, when the Black Bears host Vermont on Senior Day and the regular season finale.
