Black Bears Outlast Brown in Overtime, 102-96

Millan (36), Rossignol (25) post career-high point totals

Bangor, Maine -- Blanca Millan posted a career-high 36 points as the Black Bears outscored Brown 14-8 in the overtime period to stretch its win streak to five-straight with a 102-96 decision on Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.

Parise Rossignol added a career-best 25 points effort while Tanesha Sutton chipped in her eighth career double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Dor Saar tallied her first-ever double-double, finishing with 10 points and a career-best 11 assists.

Maine's point total was the first time the Black Bears reached the century mark of 100 points against a Division I opponent since doing so on March 5, 1997 against Drexel.

The Black Bears assisted on 23 of their 35 field goals, finishing the game at 50.7-percent from the floor with 14 three point field goal makes. Maine also was highly efficient from the free throw line for the second consecutive game, ending the contest 12-of-15 from the charity stripe.

Brown got off to a hot start, shooting 62.5-percent in the first half to help it build a seven point edge on Shayna Mehta's jumper with 2:32 left in the period.

The Black Bears, trailing by 10 early in the second, began to chip away. Back-to-back buckets from Millan came as part of 9-0 Maine run. Three-straight from Sutton brought the Black Bears back within one. Following a Brown bucket, Millan stuck her third triple of the half, then one tying the game at 28-28 with 6:34 left in the second quarter.

Brown staged a 9-0 run to build a 37-28 lead with four minutes remaining in the half.

The Bears' lead stretched to 12 late in the period but Maine continued to fight. Maine closed the half with a 6-0 run, with triples from McVicar and Millan, to send the game into the break with Brown leading, 45-39.

Maine came out of the locker room charging, putting together a 6-0 run as Sutton found Rossignol for two to put the Black Bears on top, 47-45.

Back and forth action continued through the third, with three lead changes and two ties before Brown staged a 5-0 run to snatch a 60-55 lead.

Maine closed the quarter strong with buckets from Rossignol and a Millan buzzer beater as the game would enter the half with Brown clinging to a 60-59 advantage.

The Black Bears' offense exploded over the first half of the fourth period as Maine, putting together a 25-5 run to take a 16 point lead. A three from Saar gave Maine its first double-digit lead of the day at 76-65 before Millan found Rossignol to cap a 13-0 sprint. After a triple from Mehta, Sutton answered with back-to-back jumpers as part of a 6-0 run.

With 3:54 left in regulation, the Black Bears held their largest lead of the game at 84-68.

Brown began its comeback, answering Maine's surge with a 20-4 run to tie the game at 88-88. A last second effort by the Black Bear offense rimmed out and the game would enter the overtime period.

The Bears tallied the first bucket of the extra frame, a triple from Erika Steeves, but Maine would respond with a 9-0 run. Millan tallied seven points over the sprint as Maine rebuilt a six point edge, 97-91.

The Black Bears lead would grow to nine on a pair of Millan free throws with 49-seconds to play. Maine would hold on the rest of the way, taking its fifth-straight win by a 102-96 final.

Maine returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 22 when it travels to meet No. 10 NC State on Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
