BURLINGTON, VT-- The UMaine Women's Ice Hockey team earned two key conference points over the University of Vermont in a 2-1 road victory Friday afternoon.
Â
How It Happened
Â
First goal (1-0 Maine): Vendula Pribylova handled a stretch pass by
Celine Tedenby from the defensive zone across the neutral zone. Pribylova picked up the puck at the far blueline and drove to the net from the boards, cutting across the faceoff circle. She chipped a short pass in the paint to Tereza Vanisova finished in close to put Maine on the board.
Â
Second goal (1-1): Just as the power play expired, Vermont carried over the offensive momentum and cycle down low. The initial shot attempt stayed down low and was picked up along the post, where it was sent up to Taylor Flaherty, whose one-time shot through a screen went in.
Â
Third goal (2-1 Maine): The puck was pulled away from the corner by
Brittany Colton as she peeled away from defensive pressure, pitching a pass to
Michelle Weis at the hash marks. Weis fed a tape-to-tape pass to
Ebba Strandberg at the high point, where she sent a lightning-quick shot in for the eventual game-winning goal.
Â
Notes:
- Vanisova's goal was the 45th of her career, putting the junior at No. 5 on the career goal scoring list in Maine women's hockey history.
- Maine went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, including an extended 5-on-3 midway through the third.
-
Carly Jackson anchored Maine's defense, as the goaltender finished with 23 saves for the Black Bears.
- Strandberg was named the game's first star, while Vanisova was named the games' third star.
Â
Next: Maine returns to the ice Saturday afternoon to finish the weekend set against Vermont in Burlington. Puck drop is at 1 p.m.
