Softball drops pair on day two of Griz Classic

Leonard, Derrick, Niland all homer for Maine

MISSOULA, Mt. -- The University of Maine softball team struggled on day two of the Griz Classic, losing a close one 6-5 to Seattle before falling to Montana, 10-1, in five innings.

Erika Leonard recorded two hits, including a grand slam, and worked a pair of walks to lead the offense. Laurine German went 3-for-3 in game one while Alyssa Derrick and Kristen Niland each tallied home runs.

The scoring was slow in game one against Seattle. The Redhawks broke the ice, plating a pair in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.

Maine answered by posting five runs in the top of the sixth. Niland started the inning with a solo blast over the wall in left. Maddie Moore worked a walk before singles from German and Sarah Coyne loaded the bases for the Black Bears. Leonard stepped in and crushed a grand slam, giving Maine a 5-2 lead.

However, the Redhawks rallied in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 5-all before Madison Cathcart's RBI single down the left field line gave Seattle a 6-5 walk-off win.

Erin Bogdanovich was solid in the start, giving up two runs on six hits in 4.0 innings while fanning three. Annie Kennedy took the tough loss in relief, tossing 2.1 innings while surrendering four runs, two earned, on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Maine struggled in game two as it was only able to muster a pair of hits before dropping a 10-1 decision in five innings to Montana.

Derrick, who notched her sixth home run of the year, and Moore recorded the two hits for Maine.

Derrick's solo blast came in the top of the first, giving Maine an early 1-0 lead.

However, the Black Bears would not score again. Montana answered with six runs in the bottom of the first before extending its lead to 9-1 with three more runs in the second.

A single run in the fourth for the Griz gave the host team a 10-1 advantage.

Maine was unable to cut into the lead as Montana hung on to its lead, ending the game in the fifth by the run-rule limit.

The Black Bears close out their spring trip with a single game against Montana on Sunday at 12:30 EST.
