Baseball Can't Complete Comback, Edged out by Miami 4-3

The Black Bears stranded two after a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the eighth.

CORAL GABLES, Florida - The Black Bears took on the University of Miami on Tuesday night and despite giving up a three-run home run in the bottom of the third, were able to make it a competitive game as they were down by one run for two straight innings, but were unable to tie the game as Miami took the game by a score of 4-3.

Trevor DeLaite gets the loss for the Black Bears in his second start of the season, as he finished with 6.1 innings pitched, letting up only three runs, three earned runs, and five walks, striking out three; he let up a three-run homer in the bottom of the third, after an error scored a run for Miami in the bottom of the second, and Miami held a 4-0 lead after three innings of play.

The Black Bears would answer back in the top of the fourth, however, as Brandon Vicens hit a sacrifice RBI, scoring Chris Bec from third base to put Maine on the board, 4-1. The very next inning Danny Casals hit a two-out solo home run, his first of the season, to cut the lead in half 4-2.

By the top of the seventh inning, the Black Bears were gaining momentum with three scoreless defensive innings, and with Kevin Doody on base due to a walk, he advanced to second due to a Lou Della Fera sacrifice bunt. Danny Casals would hit an infield single, with the throw at first going just off the mark, allowing Doody to score Maine's third run, while Casals tried to stretch it to a double and was tagged out at second.

Maine had an opportunity to tie it in the top of the eighth with bases loaded and no outs, but a failed squeeze attempt, along with a strike out and pop out, would get Miami out of the jam cleanly, and Maine was held to just three runs.

Cody Laweryson came into the game for DeLaite in the seventh inning; he faced five batters in 1.2 innings, allowing no hits, no walks, and no runs on three strikeouts

The Black Bears and 'Canes will face off again Wednesday night at 6pm.
