Koizar scores game-high 25 in loss at UAlbany

Maine now 8-7 in America East play

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Sigi Koizar matched a season-high with 25 points but Maine's comeback came up short as the Black Bears fell at UAlbany by a score of 64-60 on Saturday afternoon.

Maine, which trailed by as many as 13, came racing back in the fourth quarter. Tanesha Sutton's 3-pointer with 3:17 to play cut the UAlbany lead to just two. But the Black Bears could not get over the hump.

Koizar, who became just the seventh in Maine women's basketball history to eclipse 1,600 points, knocked down five 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Julie Brosseau joined Koizar in double-digits, finishing with 14 points with four field goals from beyond the arc.

Maine did the majority of its scoring from outside, going 10-for-26 from 3-point range and finished 23-for-62 (37.1%) from the floor. The Black Bears were outscored 36-16 in the paint. The game featured a total of 39 turnovers; UAlbany with 20 and Maine checking in with 19.

The Great Danes came out on fire as they went 9-for-12 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point range, in the first quarter. UAlbany began the game with a 17-6 run, taking an 11 point lead just 5:40 into the contest before carrying an eight point edge into the second.

Still trailing by eight, Maine put together a brief 4-0 run to keep the game in check. Koizar pulled down a rebound and raced up court, cashing in a fastbreak bucket before a pair of free throws from Laia Sole cut the lead to four.

UAlbany answered with a 6-0 run to retake a double-digit lead. Brosseau snapped the run with a triple but UAlbany would lead 35-26 at the break.

The Great Danes' lead once again reached double-digits as Tiana-Jo Carter's layup with 4:58 left in the third gave UAlbany its largest lead (13), 46-33.

Koizar knocked down a pair of triples while Brosseau added another as part of Maine's 13-7 run, bringing the Black Bears back within seven.

Maine, trailing by eight at the start of the fourth, continued along the comeback trail. The Black Bears reeled off the first seven points of the fourth quarter. A jumper from Naira Caceres with 7:45 to play brought Maine all the way back within a point.

UAlbany answered, staging a 6-0 run before Koizar's fifth triple of the game cut the lead to three. After a UAlbany bucket, Sutton stroked a three and Maine found itself back within a pair with 3:17 remaining.

Maine had a total of seven possessions to tie or take the lead down the stretch but was unable to capitalize. Jessica Fequiere's two free throws with 10-seconds left ended the scoring as UAlbany escaped with a 64-60 lead.

The Black Bears close out their regular season on Sunday, Feb. 26 when they host Binghamton on Senior Day. For tickets, please visit the Cross Insurance Center box office or purchase online at TicketMaster.com.
