Women's Basketball drops 65-57 decision to New Hampshire

Maine's 21-game home conference win streak snapped

BANGOR, Maine -- Sigi Koizar tallied her second double-double in as many games but it wasn't enough as the University of Maine women's basketball team (15-14, 8-6 AE) fell to the America East's top seed New Hampshire (22-4, 12-1) by a score of 65-57 on Wednesday evening.

The loss snapped Maine's 21-game conference home win streak. The Black Bears, who had won eight in a row at the Cross Insurance Center, finished the game 22-for-55 (40.0%) from the floor.

Koizar finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth career double-double, hitting all seven of her attempts from the free throw line. Koizar's scoring total marked her third-straight game in double-figures. Blanca Millan added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting while Laia Sole joined the duo in double-digits with 11.

For the third time this season, and the second in three games, Maine committed few than 10 turnovers, giving it away just eight times.

The Black Bears, who never led in the game, trailed by one with four minutes to play in the first quarter. At that point, the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-11 lead in the final minutes of the opening stanza.

The lead expanded to seven before three points from Sole cut the advantage back down to four.

New Hampshire responded, putting together a 12-2 to take its largest lead of the half, 32-18, with 2:51 remaining in the second quarter. At the break, the Wildcats' lead would be 37-24.

Maine regrouped at the half and came out of the break on fire. After the Wildcats ran their lead to 15, Maine responded with a 9-0 run. Millan, who tallied 12 of her 14 points in the third quarter alone, started the sprint with five in a row before Kelava and Koizar ended the run, cutting the lead to six.

New Hampshire ran the lead back out to double-digits on a layup by Kat Fogarty before carrying a nine-point edge into the fourth.

Maine would trail by 10 midway through the final quarter before putting together one last run. A triple from Julie Brosseau jump started a 6-0 sprint, ending with a free throw by Koizar to bring the Black Bears back within four.

However, it would be as close as Maine would get. The Wildcats kept control and escaped with a 65-57 victory.

Maine returns to action with its final road contest of the year when it travels to the site of last year's America East title game. The Black Bears will look for the season sweep at UAlbany on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
