Koizar's double-double leads Maine past Stony Brook in overtime

Four Black Bears finish in double-figures

BANGOR, Maine -- Sigi Koizar tallied 18 of her 21 points in the second half as the University of Maine women's basketball team (15-13, 8-5 America East) defeated Stony Brook (10-15, 3-9) in overtime by a score of 78-71 on Sunday afternoon.

Maine outscored Stony Brook 11-4 in the extra frame to move its home record to 9-1 on the season after tallying its 21st-straight home league victory.

Koizar added 11 rebounds to finish with her fourth career double-double Tanesha Sutton matched her career-best effort with 16 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Sutton finished 6-of-9 from the floor while Koizar, who hit all five of her free throw attempts, ended her day 7-of-18 from the field.

Maine dominated action inside, outscoring the Seawolves 44-26 in the paint. The Black Bears also featured a 31-8 advantage off the bench, with Julie Brosseau (11) and Laia Sole (10) each tallying double-digit efforts.

The contest featured 12 lead changes and nine ties as both teams battled back from deficits, with Maine at one time leading by 12.

Maine controlled play in the first quarter, building its lead out to eight just over four minutes in as part of a 5-0 run capped on a layup from Blanca Millan. A late jumper from Sheraton Jones gave the Black Bears a 17-10 lead after one, with 12 of their points coming in the paint.

Maine continued charging, scoring the first four points of the second to take its largest lead of the game, 22-10.

Stony Brook has the answer, putting together a 10-0 run to erase the advantage to just a pair at the midway point of the second.

Maine snapped the run with a pair of buckets from Fanny Wadling and would carry a 28-22 lead into the break.

Back and forth action was featured throughout the third with four ties in the quarter until Stony Brook grabbed its first lead, 41-40, with 2:36 left in the quarter. A short 4-0 run by Maine regained a three-point edge before Aaliyah Worley's 3-pointer sent the game into the fourth tied at 44.

Stony Brook's Christa Scognamiglio started the fourth with a triple, giving the visitors a 47-44 lead.

Maine regained the lead with a 5-0 run, taking a two point lead on Brosseau's second triple of the afternoon.

The Seawolves tied the game for the seventh time with 6:41 before taking a four-point lead with 4:53 to go.

It then became Sigi time as the senior scored Maine's next 12 points, eventually knocking down a big three to lift Maine to a 63-60 lead with 1:25 left in regulation.

Stony Brook raced back, taking a one point edge on a layup by Kori Bayne-Walker, who finished with a game-high 25, with 35-seconds to play.

Sutton came up with a huge play late as she soared to grab an offensive rebound and netted the putback, regaining a lead for Maine with 31-seconds left. A free throw by Jones put Maine back up two but Scognamiglio's layup with 7-seconds to play knotted the game at 67-67 and eventually sent the game to overtime.

Maine began the extra period with a 4-0 run before Koizar kicked a pass out to Sutton who knocked down the triple, giving Maine a 74-68 lead. A layup by Sole followed as Maine's lead grew to eight with 1:22 to play.

Late free throws from Brosseau extended Maine's lead to seven as the Black Bears would hold on for the 78-71 victory.

Maine puts its three-game win streak on the line on Wednesday, Feb. 15 when it welcomes the conference leading New Hampshire Wildcats to the Cross Insurance Center.
