Bangor, Maine -- Blanca Millan posted her first career double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Maine women's basketball team (2-1) outlasted Bryant (0-3) by a 70-68 final in overtime on Tuesday evening at the Cross Insurance Center.
Millan, who has now recorded 20+ points in back-to-back games, finished 12-for-24 from the floor with five steals, three assists and a career-best three blocks. Dor Saar (12) and
Tanesha Sutton (10) each added double-digit scoring efforts while Maeve Carroll provided terrific minutes off the bench, finishing with four points, nine rebounds and four assists.
The game, which featured 11 ties and eight lead changes, featured back and forth action for much of the duration.
Bryant raced out to a six-point edge early when Sydney Holloway, who finished with a team-high 19 points, converted a free throw with 4:28 to play in the first quarter.
The Black Bears closed the quarter on a 12-6 run as Carroll's jumper tied the score at 16-all moving into the second quarter.
Millan's 3-pointer early in the second period gave the Black Bears a 20-18 lead and jump started a 12-2 run which saw Maine take its largest lead of the game, 29-20, with five minutes left in the half.
Much like the Black Bears did in the first quarter, Bryant was able to fight back, closing out the half with nine unanswered points to tie the game at 29-29 at the half.
The Bulldogs clung to a four-point lead early in the third before Maine's offense sparked. Six points from Millan came as part of a 17-7 Maine run as the tides were turned and the Black Bears lead grew to six, 48-42, with 1:10 left in the third.
Bryant fought back early in the fourth, putting together an extended 15-2 run to take a seven point lead with 5:11 to play.
Back-to-back buckets from Sutton brought Maine back within three before a steal from Millan led to a game-tying three from
Parise Rossignol.
Bryant's Kierra Palmer gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead just seconds later.
Maine came up empty on four-straight shot attempts before finally tying the game on a layup by Millan with 1:27 to play in regulation.
Failed attempts by both teams, including a pair of 3-point changes from Palmer, down the stretch sent the game to overtime, knotted at 63-63.
The Black Bears never trailed in the overtime period. A jumper by Saar broke a 66-66 tie with 1:30 remaining. After a Bryant free throw, Saar was able to draw a foul. The freshman knocked down both attempts to give Maine a 70-67 lead.
Bryant's Kathleen Everson drove the lane, drawing a foul of her own. Everson made the first free throw and missed the second before Ashley was able to track down the offensive rebound. However, Carroll would steal the pass off the inbound to seal the 70-67 victory.
