Black Bears hold 9-5 advantage in shots
Orono, Maine -- Ghislaine Beerkens' goal in the 64th minute broke a scoreless tie as the University of Maine field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 18 UAlbany on Friday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex.
The Black Bears (7-4, 1-1) controlled play over the opening 35-minutes of action, holding a 6-1 advantage in shots and earning a pair of penalty corner chances. However, the game would enter the half scoreless.
Action picked up in the second, beginning with the first of Emma Cochran's pair of big saves to keep the game scoreless. Cochran's first save of the second half came when she stonewalled UAlbany's (6-5, 3-1) Dana Bozek who found herself all alone in the middle of the circle. Just minutes later, Cochran's diving save turned away a blast from the point by Katie MacCallum.
The Black Bears' offense rode the momentum off the key saves as they would earn a corner in the 57th minute. Crowley's blast off the set corner was saved but the rebound found the stick of Madison Cummings. Cummings was able to flick the ball at the cage but the shot would go just wide.
Four minutes later, UAlbany's Billi Wehrer was issued a green card just before a yellow was handed out to UAlbany's MacCallum. Maine looked to take advantage of the two person advantage but the Great Danes killed off the green penalty.
Despite MacCallum still serving the yellow card, UAlbany was able to move into the Maine zone before Beerkens dribbled around a pair of defenders and broke the scoreless tie with her sixth goal of the year.
Maine would pull Cochran out of a timeout and play the final 5:08 without a keeper. However, it was unable to take advantage, ultimately dropping the America East contest by a 1-0 final.
The Black Bears are back in league action on Sunday when they host Vermont at 1 p.m.
