Maine improves to 3-1 in America East play with the win

DURHAM, N.H. – Holding a 4-1 advantage in the second half, the UMaine field hockey team held off a Wildcat comeback, downing rival New Hampshire 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field. With the win, Maine improves to 9-4, and 3-1 in the America East, while New Hampshire drops to 5-8, and 2-2 in conference.

Leading 4-1 with less than 20 minutes left, UNH added goals in the 61^st and 67^th minutes to cut Maine's lead to just one, but the Black Bears prevented the Wildcats from scoring in the final minutes to earn the victory.

Brianna Ricker recorded two goals to lead the Black Bear offense, while Riley Field and Casey Crowley also contributed scores to take down the Wildcats. Crowley and Lydia Gavner tallied assists in the win.

Maine goalkeeper Emma Cochran improves to 9-4 on the season, stopping a total of six shots in 70 minutes in net.The Wildcats outshot the Black Bears 14-10 on the day, and also led in penalty corners by a count of 5-1.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Maine has now won five straight contests against the Wildcats. However, UNH still leads the all-time series by a 27-16 margin.
With two goals in today's game, Ricker has now tallied seven goals in the last seven games. She now leads the Black Bears with 10 goals and 23 points this season.
The Black Bears have started America East play with a 3-1 record in each of the last two seasons.
Today's game marked the second time that Maine has been outshot this season, and the first since the Black Bears played Providence in the season opener on August 25.

HOW IT HAPPENED

7' | Ricker got the Black Bears on the scoreboard early, dribbling the ball down the base line, before firing a backhander past the incoming Wildcat goalkeeper.
33' |10 yards from the goal, Casey Crowley shot a bouncing ball that found the right side of the net.
34' | With just seven seconds left until halftime, UNH's Katie Audino redirected a ball from Ashley Mendonca to cut Maine's lead to 2-1.
41' | The Black Bears took a 3-1 lead when Ricker timed a one-timer into the net off a pass from Lydia Gavner.
50' | On her birthday, Riley Field accepted a perfect pass from Crowley, and shot high-left to beat the UNH goalkeeper. The goal marked Fields' second goal of the season.
61' | UNH's Bloem van den Brekel converted a pass from Gianna Bensaia in front of the net to cut Maine's lead to 4-2.
67' | Taylor Scafidi dribbled down right of the goal and shot at an extreme angle to find the back of the net.

UP NEXT

The Black Bears are idle until next Friday, when Maine hosts UMass Lowell at 3:00 p.m. at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex. Maine defeated UMass Lowell 3-2 in overtime, earlier this season.
