Football Stumbles at Toledo

Black Bears Set to Host James Madison in Home Opener, Sept. 24

Box Score TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Maine football team jumped out to an early lead but could not hold on, falling at Toledo by a score of 45-3 on Saturday evening.

For the second-straight game, Christophe Mulumba Tshimanga racked up double-digit tackles, making 10 stops against the Rockets. Sterling Sheffield added five stops and recorded his second career interception.

Maine punter James DeMartini notched 10 punts for 440 yards, averaging 44.0 yards per punt and falling just one punt short of tying the all-time record for punts in a single game at Maine.

Offensively, quarterback Dan Collins finished 9-for-25 with 65-yards, finding Marquise Adams three times for 31 of his 65 yards. Darian Davis-Ray led the way on the ground, carrying the ball 11 times for 67-yards.

Collins and the offense moved efficiently on its opening drive, converting on three-straight third downs to move deep into Toledo territory. The senior quarterback tucked the ball away, taking off for a 16-yard rush down to the Toledo 7-yard line. But the drive would stall, forcing Patrick Leonard to hit a 29-yard field goal, completing a lengthy 15 play drive covering 68-yard in 7:09.

Maine's defense forced Toledo into a quick third and nine on the opening drive but quarterback Logan Woodside responded, hitting Corey Jones for an 85-yard touchdown strike with 6:29 left in the opening quarter.

Toledo added to its lead with a 31-yard field goal from Jameson Vest with 5:33 left in the half. The Rockets extended their lead shortly after when Woodside found Cody Thompson for a 64-yard pass and score, giving Toledo a 17-3 lead at the half.

The Rockets began driving early in the second half but were haulted after Mulumba Tshimanga tipped a Woodside pass and Sheffield was able to make the interception, the second of his career.

However, Toledo responded as Woodside threw for his third touchdown of the night, finding Michael Roberts for a 21-yard score with 5:50 to play in the third quarter. The score started a three touchdown third quarter for the Rockets.

Toledo added a special teams touchdown to the scoring summary when Ronnie Jones returned a blocked punt 27-yard for a third quarter score.

Woodside tacked on his fourth score of the game, this time an 89-yard completion to Jon'Vea Johnson, late in the third quarter.

A 43-yard rush by Art Thompkins brought the Rockets down to the Maine 2-yard line before Thompkins punched it in on the next play, expanding the Toledo lead to 45-3 with just under three minutes to play.

The Black Bears will move into their bye week before hosting James Madison in the home opener on Sept. 24 at noon. Tickets are available now at GoBlackBears.com or by calling the ticket office at 207-581-BEAR.
