Box Score ORONO, Maine -- Maine field hockey opened the 2016 campaign with a 7-1 win over Providence College at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex. Maine improves to 1-0 on the year while Providence falls to 0-1.
Madison Cummings,
Libby Riedl and Briana Ricker each had two goals on the day,
Samantha Wagg was the other goal scorer for the Black Bears.
Emma Cochran started in goal for the Black Bears and Megan Guilbert for the Friars.
Maine jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Cummings 1:56 into the game to put the Black Bears on top, 1-0.
Libby Riedl followed four minutes later with a goal of her own set up by
Danielle Aviani to give Maine an early 2-0 advantage. Less than a minute later, Riedl scored her second of the game and the third Black Bear goal for a 3-0 lead.
Samantha Wagg added a goal of her own 13:31 into the first half off of assists from Riedl and
Ella Mosky, to give Maine a commanding 4-0 lead.
Kalie Kilmer of Providence was able to capitalize off of a rebound to give the Friars their first goal of the year to cut into Maine's lead, 4-1.
Just before the end of the first half,
Brianna Ricker scored her first career goal as a member of the Black Bears off of an assist from sophomore
Casey Crowley to give Maine a 5-1 lead heading into the break.
Maine had 16 first half shots to Providence's one.
Emily Corbett started in goal for Maine in the second half.
Ten minutes into the second half,
Madison Cummings scored her second of the game on a tip-in to increase the margin, 6-1.
Brianna Ricker added her second of the game and Maine's seventh of the day three minutes later.
The Black Bears return to action Sunday, August 28, as they host Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free!
