Men's Basketball Falls to Quinnipiac in Portland

Wes Myers' 21 points, Fleming's 11, not enough to lift Maine over QU

PORTLAND, Maine - The Black Bears' Men's Basketball team traveled down to the Cross Insurance Arena on Sunday afternoon to face Quinnipiac; Maine led early but was unable to protect the paint in the 2nd half as Quinnipiac took the contest 85-75. Wes Myers playing the 6th man role once again lit up the score chart with 21 points, after scoring 31 against Dartmouth last weekend.

Myers shot 9-19 from the field, and 3-4 from the charity stripe, and tallying a defensive rebound in his 31 minutes off the bench; Maine got a 51-point production out of their bench in the game.

Andrew Fleming tallied 11 points on 4-9 shooting, 3-4 from the free-throw line, and tallied 8 total rebounds. He also blocked two shots and assisted on three scoring plays.

Marko Pirovic and Ilker Er contributed from behind the arc, Pirovic finishing with 10 points on 3-7 shooting, (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the free-throw line) and Er finished with 6 on 2-5 shooting (2-3 from three).

Maine got out to an early lead, leading by as much as 10 points in the first; they finished the half with a 36-28 lead on 47.1% shooting against QU's 34.4%.

Quinnipiac came out firing in the second half with a 7-2 run, which set the tone for the rest of the half as they eventually tied the game at 40 with 17:31 left in the game; Wes Myers' layup with 16:11 left tied the game back up at 42.

A clutch 3 by Marko Pirovic at 15:08 left tied the game once again at 45, but from that point on Maine was unable to retake the lead, as Quinnipiac was able to throw together little scoring runs with points in the paint which would eventually lead to a 13 point lead, their largest of the game.

While Maine outscored QU in the paint in the first half (20 points to 16), Quinnipiac took control down low to outscore Maine 22-16 in the second half. A late 3-pointer by Dennis Ashley with 2 seconds left gave the final score of 85-75.

Maine is back on the road this week as they take on Providence College on Tuesday night at 8:30. They continue the road trip Thursday at Brown at 3:30.
