PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - The Black Bears began their 2-game Providence road trip by facing Providence College on Tuesday evening, a game that would end in a loss as the Friars took the game 79-59.
Maine shot 39% from the field to PC's 41.9%, although Maine had the edge from behind the arc, 30.4% to 27.6%
Andrew Fleming got his first career double-double on a 12 point, 11 rebound effort. His points came on 5-for-11 shooting from the field including hitting a 3-point shot (also the first of his career) on his only attempt in the game. He also added two assists and a steal
Wes Myers scored in double figures for the third straight game with 11 points on 5-for-12 shooting (1-for-5 from three), with a rebound and assist, as well as two blocks and a pair of steals.
Jaquan McKennon, after a career day against Quinnipiac netting eight points, notched a new high with nine points against the Friars from four shots on six attempts, along with two rebounds and three assists.
Other key Black Bear contributors were
Dennis Ashley, who had eight points, two rebounds and one assist,
Vincent Eze, who scored four points and grabbed six rebounds,
Marko Pirovic who had five rebounds and dished an assist, and
Austin Howard who tallied seven points and an assist.
The first half was dominated by the Friars as Providence started the game on an 18-2 run which eventually led to an early lead of 31-12, Providence's largest lead of the half. After a scoring lull by both teams, Maine tried to rally back with buckets by
Dennis Ashley,
Wes Myers, and
Ilija Stojiljkovic, cutting the lead to 10 with 5:22 remaining in the first half.
The first half would end with a 16 point lead for Providence, 41-25.
Maine would open up the half with two quick baskets for Fleming, who would eventually be on his way to his first career double-double, but despite key second-half efforts by Fleming, Myers, and McKennon, Providence always had an answer, leading by as much as 27 points in the second half, eventually winning by the final 20-point margin, 79-59.
Maine will stay in Providence to face Brown University on Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm.
