Maine Drops Weekend Double Header to Clemson

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Maine baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Clemson on Saturday afternoon in Augusta, Ga. Maine dropped the first game 5-4 in 14 innings and then fell in the second game 10-2.
In the first game, Clemson got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Slaton drew a walk and scored when Steven Dugger hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice and Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) followed with a single. Heath scored on an error when Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice. Morrill scored the second run of the inning when Danny Diaz (Miami, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chase Ponder singled and scored on a wild pitch. Clemson took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Andrew Cox doubled and scored when Eli White singled. White scored on a Dugger sacrifice fly.
Maine tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Florida) doubled to left center and scored when Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) reached on an error. Heath followed and drew a walk. Doran tied the game when Morrill singled.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 14th inning when Tyler Slaton walked and scored when Tyler Krieger singled to center field.
Heath got the start on the mound for the Black Bears and went six innings. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits. He struck out a pair of batters. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pennsylvania) went two scoreless innings fanning a pair. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Massachusetts) went the final 5.1 innings. He allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out five. He suffers the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season.
Zach Irwin went 7.2 innings for the Tigers and allowed four unearned runs while striking out five. Hunter Van Horn pitched a third of an inning. Drew Moyer went three scoreless innings while Alex Schnell also posted three scoreless innings to earn the win.
In the second game, Maine grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Chappell singled to center field and scored when Bussey doubled down the left field line.
Clemson tied the game in the bottom of the frame when XX Okey tripled and scored on a balk.
The Black Bears took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning. Morrill doubled and scored when Chappell hit a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cox doubled down the right field line and scored when Rohlman hit a sac fly. The team added to its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Clemson then added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and four in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-2 final.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) got the start for the Black Bears and went 5.1 innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out four. He falls to 0-2 on the season. Fullmer replaced Courtney and he retired the two batters that he faced. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on four hits over 1.1 innings. Jonah Normandeau (Cumberland, Maine) pitched the final two thirds of an inning and allowed one run on one hit.
Brody Koerner went eight innings for the Tigers to get the win. He improves to 1-1 on the season. He allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out three. Pat Krall pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
