Baseball Falls to St. Bonaventure 3-1

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon in Winter Haven, Fla. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) led the Black Bears with three hits.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Maine got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled to right field to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) and moved to third when Scott Heath stuck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Doran scored the first run of the game when Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice.
St. Bonaventure tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Bret Heath reached on an infield single and scored when Jonathan Diaz doubled to center. The Bonnies took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Thad Johnson singled to center field and scored when Tyler Bell doubled.
The Bonnies made it a 3-1 final with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Danny Urban tripled and scored when Tyler Kirwan singled.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) had a strong outing on the mound, as he allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out five batters and falls to 0-3 on the season. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pennsylvania) replaced Courtney and went 3.1 innings. He allowed a run on three hits while striking out three.
Drew Teller got the start for St Bonaventure and went 6.2 innings on the mound. He allowed one run on nine hits while striking out three. He earns the win and improves to 1-0 on the season. Nate Grant allowed a hit in a third of an inning. Thad Johnson pitched the final two innings.
The two teams return to action on Saturday, March 28 when they play a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
