
Men's Ice Hockey Falls in Overtime at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vermont – The University of Maine men's ice hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Vermont in overtime on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt.
The Black Bears, who see their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end, fall to 3-5-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in Hockey East play. Fourteenth ranked Vermont improves to 5-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 in league play.
Maine struck first with a power play goal at 12:37 of the opening frame. Brown found Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) who had his shot from just inside the crease beat UVM goalie Brody Hoffman. Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) also assisted on the goal for Maine. For Shore, it was his fourth goal of the season.
Maine added to its lead in the final minute of the first period when Connor Leen (Chester, N.Y.) stole a puck on the opposite blueline, raced in alone and beat Hoffman for his first goal of the season.
Vermont pulled to within one goal at 6:18 of the second period with a power play goal by Colin Markison. Mike Stenerson and Mike Paliotta each assisted on the goal for the Catamounts. Vermont then tied the game at 2-2 at 13:28 when Markison scored his second goal of the period. Stenerson and Brady Shaw each assisted on the goal for Vermont.
Maine took the lead with just 0.2 seconds remaining in the second period. On the power play, Swavely got the puck to Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) in the slot. He fired a shot that went wide, but Brown collected the puck and banked it into the back of the goal.
Maine held onto the lead the majority of the third period thanks to some great saves by goalie Matt Morris (Ridgewood, N.J.).
Vermont tied the game at 3-3 with just 58 seconds remaining in regulation. The Catamounts had pulled goalie Brody Hoffman in favor of an extra attacker and Mario Puskarich had his shot from just above the face-off circle beat Maine goalie Morris high on his stick side. Mike Stenerson scored 3:13 into overtime to give the Catamounts the 4-3 win.
Vermont outshot Maine 37-24 in the game. The Black Bears were 2-for-4 on the power play, while Vermont finished the game 1-for-1.
Morris tied his career-high with 33 saves in the game. He falls to 2-3-1 overall. Hoffman made 21 saves and improves to 4-0-1.
The two teams conclude their two-game Hockey East series on Saturday, Nov. 8. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.
