Baseball Falls at Stetson 6-2

DELAND, Fla.- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Stetson on Tuesday evening in DeLand, Fla. Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) had a hit and scored a run in the game, while Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) had a hit and drove in a run.
Maine falls to 1-6 on the season, while Stetson improves to 6-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Hatters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Robert Crews doubled down the right field line. Jeff Simpson reached on an error and Crews scored. Simpson advanced to third on a balk and then scored when Ben Carhart reached on an error.
Stetson added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sean Emory singled to shortstop and then stole second base. Mitchel Brennan singled to left field and Brennan moved to third base. Robert Crews then put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Brennan to second and scoring Emory. Simpson followed with a single to right field and Brennan scored.
The Hatters added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nick Rickles walked and scored when Mark Jones singled to right center. Stetson extended its lead to 6-0 when Rickles homered over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Maine got on the board in the top of the ninth inning. Taylor Lewis struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) followed and drew a walk. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) then reached on a fielder's choice and Lewis advanced to third base. Martin then stole second base. Lewis scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) grounded out. Martin scored the second run of the game when Tyler Patzalek singled to right center field, but that was as close as the Black Bears would get.
A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went 4.2 innings and allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on six hits. He struck out five batters in the game and falls to 0-1 on the season. He was replaced by Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y.) who went 1.2 innings for the Black Bears. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out four. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) made his debut for the Black Bears in the game. He went 1.2 innings and surrendered a single hit.
Kurt Schluter went seven innings on the mound for the Hatters. He scattered just two hits and did not allow a run while striking out seven batters to pick up the victory.
Maine returns to action on Wednesday, March 2 when it travels to the University of Central Florida for a game. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
