Lewis, Calbick Lead Maine Past Penn 10-5

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Maine baseball team defeated Penn 10-5 on Saturday afternoon in Rollins College Baseball Week Tournament. Maine improves to 2-7 on the season with the win.
Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) reached on an error and scored when Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) doubled down the left field line. The Black Bears added two runs in the third inning. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. Lewis followed and drew a walk. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) singled to load the bases. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) singled to right field scoring Martin. Lewis scored when Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly.
The Black Bears added two more runs in the fourth inning when Martin singled up the middle and then Lewis followed with a home run to right field.
The Black Bears extended their lead to 9-0 in the sixth inning. Fransoso walked and Martin singled. Lewis singled down the right field line, Martin advanced to second and Fransoso scored. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice, Lewis advanced to third and Martin scored on an error. Alex Calbick followed with a sacrifice bunt, Ian Leisenheimer moved to third and Lewis scored. Patzalek then doubled to center field plating Ian Leisenheimer.
Maine made it a 10-0 game when Calbick homered in the eighth inning.
Penn scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to make it a 10-5 final. In the eighth inning, Jeremy Maas singled up the middle and Spencer Branigan followed with two-run home run. In the ninth, Greg Zebrack singled through the left side and Will Davis was hit. Maas followed with a three-run home run, making it a 10-5 game.
Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs while striking out six. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Joe Miller (Valley Stream N.Y.) pitched 3.2 innings in relief. He allowed five runs on six hits while striking out three.
Vince Voiro picked up the loss for UMass as he allowed six runs on nine hits.
Lewis led the Black Bears as he was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Calbick finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. He belted his first career home run in the game.
The Black Bears return to action later this afternoon when they face Georgetown.
