Binghamton takes both games in conference doubleheader

Kaelyn Larkin had a grand slam for Maine.

VESTAL, N.Y – The University of Maine softball team fell in both ends of an America East doubleheader at Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
 
Maine will return to action on Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader at Fairfield.

How it Happened
  • After Binghamton went up 2-0 in the first inning, Maine responded with a seven-run second … Neve Adams knocked a three-run home run to center and then Kaelyn Larkin sent a grand slam to right center for a 7-2 edge after two.
  • The Bearcats had a four-run third frame to cut the deficit … and then after Maine pushed one run across in the top of the fourth, Binghamton put three runs up in the home half to retake the lead, 9-8.
  • Binghamton pushed its lead to 12-8 with three runs in the sixth … Maine didn't go quietly, using a pair of RBI doubles and an infield RBI to make it a one-run game in the top of the seventh but Binghamton held on for the 12-11 win.

  • Alysen Rieth started in the circle, going 2.2 innings, while Ava Zettlemoyer threw 3.1 innings in relief.
  • Maine is now 39-38 all-time against Binghamton.
  • Maggie Helms was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double … her three hits mark a career-high.
  • Kaelyn Larkin was 2-for-4, including a grand slam.
  • With her grand slam in the second inning, Larkin extended her hit streak to 11 games, the longest streak for Maine since Keely Clark had an 11-game hitting streak in 2021.

  • Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first … Kaelyn Larkin reached on a fielder's choice and then came around to score on an Eviana Robles double.
  • Binghamton responded in the bottom of the second, using a two-run home run and an RBI double to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Black Bears equalized with a Keira Inman two-RBI double in the top of the third … in the home half, though, the Bearcats grabbed three runs, highlighted by a two-run double to center.
  • Binghamton went on to add two runs in the fourth and then three runs in the fifth to earn the run-rule victory at 11-3

  • Hannah Hipwell started, throwing 2.1 innings … Kyla Brogan tossed 1.2 innings in relief.
