River Hawks take doubleheader from Black Bears

Maine returns to action on Wednesday at Stonehill.

LOWELL, Mass. – The University of Maine softball team fell in both ends of an America East doubleheader at UMass Lowell on Saturday at River View Field.
 
The Black Bears will play a non-conference series at Stonehill on Wednesday before returning home to host conference foe Binghamton in the home opener March 28-29.

How it Happened
  • UMass Lowell jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then added five more runs in the bottom of the second.
  • The Black Bears had base runners in each of the first three frames but couldn't get on the board until the fourth when they pushed four runs across.
  • Maggie Helms hit her first career home run in the top of the fifth but the Black Bears couldn't cut the deficit anymore and the River Hawks held on for the 13-5 run rule victory.

How it Happened
  • The teams played three scoreless frames before Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth … with Kaelyn Larkin on second, Keira Inman drove a ball to left field for the RBI single … UMass Lowell responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the River Hawks earned a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-1 lead and then a double and throwing error allowed UML to push three more in.
