LOWELL, Mass. – The University of Maine softball team fell in both ends of an America East doubleheader at UMass Lowell on Saturday at River View Field.
 
The Black Bears will play a non-conference series at Stonehill on Wednesday before returning home to host conference foe Binghamton in the home opener March 28-29.

Score: UMass Lowell 13, Maine 5

How it Happened

• UMass Lowell jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then added five more runs in the bottom of the second.
• The Black Bears had base runners in each of the first three frames but couldn't get on the board until the fourth when they pushed four runs across.
• Maggie Helms hit her first career home run in the top of the fifth but the Black Bears couldn't cut the deficit anymore and the River Hawks held on for the 13-5 run rule victory.

Game Notes

• Maine is now 19-21 in the all-time series with UMass Lowell.
• Kyla Brogan started, throwing 1.2 innings while Sage Soares tossed 2.1 innings of relief.
• Kaelyn Larkin, Eviana Robles, Maggie Helms, Neve Adams and Morgan Pool each had one hit.
• Pool had two RBI while Helms scored two runs ... Helms' home run marked the first of her collegiate career.

How it Happened

• The teams played three scoreless frames before Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth … with Kaelyn Larkin on second, Keira Inman drove a ball to left field for the RBI single … UMass Lowell responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
• In the bottom of the sixth, the River Hawks earned a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-1 lead and then a double and throwing error allowed UML to push three more in.

Game Notes

• Maine is now 19-22 in the all-time series with UMass Lowell.
• Hannah Hipwell started in the circle, throwing 4.0 innings … Alysen Rieth threw 2.0 innings in relief.
• Annika Shearer, Kaelyn Larkin, Neve Adams, Morgan Pool and Keira Inman each tallied a hit, with Inman recording Maine's lone RBI.
