NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The University of Maine softball team earned a 7-3 win over Iona on Thursday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field.
 
Maine will now open up America East play tomorrow at UMass Lowell.

How it Happened

• The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first … Francesca Guerrera earned a leadoff walk and eventually came in on a Keira Inman sacrifice fly … one batter later, Kaelyn Larkin scored on a wild pitch.
• Maine added a run in the top of the third, with an Inman's single to left field bringing in Annika Shearer from second.
• Shearer and Kaelyn Larkin opened the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles, with Shearer crossing the plate for a 4-0 lead.
• The Gaels pushed three across in the bottom of the fifth on the back of three singles and a double … Maine responded with one run in the top of the sixth.

Game Notes

• Hannah Hipwell started in the circle, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in picking up her first career win.
• Alysen Rieth (1.1) and Ava Zettlemoyer (1.0) both made relief appearances.
• Annika Shearer was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.
• Five other Black Bears recorded a hit, including Kaelyn Larkin with an RBI double and two runs scored … Keira Inman and Neve Adams had two RBI each.
