Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader at Duke

Maine won game two 4-3, the first win over Duke in program history

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Durham, N.C. – The University of Maine baseball split a doubleheader with Duke on Friday evening, losing game one 8-3 before winning game two, 4-3.

Game 1: First Pitch – 3:30 PM (8-3 Duke)

Scoring Plays:
Troy Carpenter got the Black Bears on the board first with his very first collegiate at-bat as he hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Juju Stevens (2B/SB) on the play.

The Black Bears plated their second run of the game in the third frame as Christopher Mondesir hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Stevens (BB/SB).

Carpenter added onto his solid collegiate debut with his first home run of his career, a solo shot to right field.

Pitching Breakdown:
Gambardella (0-1) went five innings in his first start of the season, allowing five runs (3 earned) on four hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Pierce Friedman went three innings in relief, allowing three runs on three hits, two walks and striking out three.

Game 2: First Pitch – 7 PM (4-3 Maine)

Scoring Plays:
Mondesir picked up his first RBI of the game and second of the day as he bunted home Stevens (2B) on the infield hit.

Maine hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning as Juju Stevens and Albert De La Rosa both hit their firsts of the season, Juju out of center field and Albert out of left field.

Aidan Bardi (BB) scored on a balk in the ninth inning to give Maine the 4-3 lead.

Pitching Breakdown:
Brennan Rumpf went three and a third in the start, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Owen Wheeler was first out of the bullpen as he went two thirds of an inning, allowing a pair of walks and striking out one.

Marshall Lock started the fifth frame on the mound and fired two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit.

Sebastian Holt (1-0) took over in the seventh inning and threw two shutout frames, allowing one hit, four walks and striking out three.

Jack Donlin (1) picked up the save as he struck out three batters in a shutout ninth frame.

Notes:
Carpenter and Hunter St. Denis both recorded their first collegiate hits in game one of the doubleheader.

Donlin picked up his first career save in the second game of the day.

The win was the first for the Black Bears over Duke in program history.
