Preview: Black Bears travel to Vermont for pair of conference games, Jan 16/17

ORONO, MAINE - The Maine women's ice hockey team travels to Burlington, Vermont for two Hockey East conference games against the Vermont Catamounts on Jan 16/17. Game times are set for 6:00 PM and 2:00 PM, respectively, at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
 

BLACK BEARS LAST TIME OUT:

•Maine was on a 4-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) before facing #5 UConn over the weekend.

•The Black Bears put up two solid battles that came down the the final seconds of the game both nights, losing 2-1 and 4-3.

Vs #5 UConn Jan 9-

Stephanie Jacob scored the lone goal on a 5v3 shorthanded opportunity.

• Kiia Lahtinen made 26 saves on Friday.

Vs #5 UConn on Jan 10-

•8 Black Bears notched a point. Isabelle Michaud, Gracie Hanson(PPG) and Ali Altiman(1st career goal) were the goal scorers.

• Mackenzie Podewell, Paige Fong, Lulu Rucinski, Kendall Sundby and goaltender Kiia Lahtinen each tallied assists. The last time a goalie had a point in a game for Maine was Carly Jackson on Jan. 14, 2017 at Northeastern.

• Lahtinen also made 35 saves for Maine.
 

MORE ON MAINE:

• Maine has played 12 games against ranked opponents.

• Maine killed off all 7 penalties successfully against UConn.

• Goaltender Kiia Lahtinen is 6th nationally with 619 saves. (.923 sv %)

• Maine is currently 7th in the Hockey East standings.
•Rookie defender Lulu Rucinski currenlty leads the team in points (4-7-11).
 

PREVIOUS GAMES WITH VERMONT:

• Last season, Maine beat Vermont twice(5-1 W, 3-1 W), and lost once (2-1 L).

• Goaltender Kiia Lahtinen played in goal all three games versus Vermont last season.
 

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS:

• Vermont was swept by Holy Cross on Dec 5/6, and since has been unbeaten in the last four games. The

Catamounts swept Dartmouth 1-0 and 2-1 to kick off the new year.

• Most recently, Vermont beat and tied Merrimack 4-1 and 3-3, picking up the shootout win.

• Goaltender Zoe Cliche has played the last four games. She has 3 shutouts this season and a .929 save percentage.

• Stella Retrum leads the team in points with 14 (7g,7a).

• Last weekend Merrimack scored all four of their goals on the powerplay, as Vermont's penalty kill is last in the NCAA.

• Vermont is 9th in the Hockey East standings.
 

UP NEXT:

• Maine returns home for two games against Merrimack College on Jan 23/24 at Alfond Arena. A Skate with the Bears event will take place post-game on Saturday, Jan 24 at Alfond Arena.

• To round out January, Maine travels to Boston College for games on Jan 30 and Feb 1.
