CAA Battle -- Both Maine and William & Mary come into the game off of an opening week loss on the road. The Black Bears took a 7-7 tie into the fourth quarter at FBS opponent Liberty before falling, 28-7. Meanwhile, Furman got the best of William & Mary in a two-point contest, 23-21.
Rhode Island and Campbell squared off in the only conference matchup on opening weekend, a 31-20 victory for Rhode Island. The other three teams that picked up a win on opening weekend were: Monmouth, Towson and UNH. Every team except Villanova saw action on opening weekend.
Series History -- This will be the 18th meeting all-time between these two CAAÂ opponents. Maine trails in the all-time series by a single game, 8-9, but has won two of the last three matchups and seven of the last 10. William & Mary won the last matchup in 2023, 28-3.
All-CAA Preseason Honors -- Trevin Ewing highlights the Black Bears on the All-CAA Preseason Honors as he named to the team as a kick returner. In 2024, Ewing returned 27 kickoffs, totaling 742 yards and one touchdown, a 98-yard score against Monmouth on Sept. 14.
Four other Black Bears were named honorable mentions, those being: QB - Carter Peevy, LB - Christian Thomas, FS - Devin Vaught and CB - Jamaree Gibson.
William & Mary Overview -- The Tribe dropped their season opener at Furman last Saturday, despite generating 115 more yards of offense and allowing only 237 yards on defense. Tyler Hughes led the Tribe in both passing (208) and rushing (78) yards on the day. He also rushed for one score and passed for another.
A Maine Win Would:
... The first win over William & Mary for Coach Stevens.
... The eighth win for the Black Bears over the Tribe in their last 11 games.
... The first CAA win of the season for the Black Bears.
... The earliest CAA win (in games played) in any season under Coach Stevens.
... The first conference opener win under Coach Stevens.
