Football Uses First Half Surge to Pick up Second-Straight CAA Victory

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine football team used a big first half to pick up their second-straight CAA victory on Saturday afternoon at Bryant, 34-14.

Scott Woods opened up the scoring early as he took a 66-yard reception for a touchdown on the first offensive possession of the game for the Black Bears. The touchdown was his second of the season.

Malcolm Folk forced a Bryant fumble on the following possession that was recovered by Latrell Couchman to set up a 29-yard field goal for the Black Bears. Samuel Tremblay knocked in a 29-yard field goal off the turnover to make it 10-0 Black Bears.

Trevin Ewing added onto the big opening quarter for the Maine offense as he scored on a 15-yard rush to left to make it 17-0 with 6:51 remaining in the quarter. The score was Ewing's first of the season.

Nick Laughlin added onto the Maine lead as he found himself on the receiving end of a 64-yard pass from Carter Peevy for his second touchdown of the season and second-straight game with a touchdown.

Jake Kucera came up with the second takeaway of the day for the Black Bears as he intercepted a pass heading towards the end zone for his first interception of the season and second interception by a Black Bear on the year. Tremblay converted on a 33-yard field goal to make it 27-0 in favor of Maine.

Woods capped off a dominant first half by the Black Bears with a 14-yard touchdown, his second of the first half, to extend the lead to 34-0.

At the half, Peevy threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Woods led the way receiving with 96 yards, followed closely by Laughlin at 92 yards.

18 different Black Bears recorded a tackle in the first half in a well-balanced defensive approach.

Maine shutout the Bulldogs until the fourth quarter when they scored a 12-yard rushing touchdown to make it 34-7 and then a 6-yard rush to make it 34-14.

Notes:

Peevy threw for 338 yards, a new high at Maine for his career. He has thrown for 300+ yards in back-to-back games for the first time at Maine.
Nick Laughlin has recorded two of the four longest touchdowns from scrimmage this season for the Black Bears offense.
Scott Woods 66-yard touchdown was the third-longest touchdown on the season for Maine.
The 20-point margin of victory was the largest in a win for Maine since Oct. 19, 2024 against Villanova (35-7 – 28-point margin).
Maine held Bryant to just 92 yards in the first half and 253 yards for the game.

Maine heads back on the road for their next matchup as they will take on Merrimack on Saturday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
